About the Author

Susan P. Robbins, Ph.D., LCSW is an Associate Professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She received her MSW from the University of Minnesota and her Ph.D. from Tulane University. She is the lead author of two monographs on drug abuse prevention and has published several book chapters on drugs and drug abuse. She has been a contributing author to the Encyclopedia of Social Work and the Social Workers' Desk Reference on the topics of cults, satanic ritual abuse and recovered memory of abuse and has published numerous articles in professional journals.

 

Pranab Chatterjee received his undergraduate education from Viswa-Bharati University in West Bengal, India.  Subsequent to that, he received a master’s degree in social work from The University of Tennessee, another master’s degree in sociology from The University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in sociology from The University of Chicago.  He is currently Grace Longwell Coyle Professor Emeritus at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.  Over the years, he has published many papers and books in social work and social welfare. His latest book is A Story of Ambivalent Modernization in Bangladesh and West Bengal (2010). Other recent books by him include Repackaging the Welfare State (1999), and Approaches to the Welfare State (1996).

 

Edward R. Canda, M.A., MSW, Ph.D., is a Professor in the School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas. He has authored or co-authored 9 books and more than 100 articles, chapters, and other publications dealing with intersections of cultural diversity, spirituality, health, and disability in theory and practice. His most recent book is Spiritual Diversity in Social Work Practice, second edition (co-authored with Leola Dyrud Furman, Oxford University Press, 2010). Dr. Canda does extensive international research and teaching, especially in East Asia. He has a special interest in comparative cross-cultural studies of philosophies and theories of human behavior. This book pioneers in integrating theory about spiritual development into a human behavior text. In recent years the profession of social work has become aware of the importance of addressing spirituality with clients, but few social workers have been trained in formal theory about spiritual development. This book is one of the few which provides this content; thus it is a critical text for use in social work Human Behavior courses. The Council on Social Work Education has included spirituality in its latest curriculum guidelines, and this text provides a way to incorporate spirituality into social work education.

This is a great paperweight. The theories and content are presented in a completely indiscernible method. No glossary and barely an index. My instructor keeps preaching about how great it is, but I continue to look at it and use other books and the internet to assist me in class. Can't wait to write my semester review on this hunk of crap.

About the Author

Janice Loudon, PhD, is an associate professor in the department of physical therapy and rehabilitation science at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. She teaches courses in applied kinesiology and biomechanics, applied musculoskeletal anatomy, evaluation methods, and principles of treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, health promotion, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

Loudon is a licensed physical therapist and licensed athletic trainer in Missouri and Kansas, an athletic trainer certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, and a sport specialist certified by the American Physical Therapy Association. In January 2002 she completed a mentorship program with the Kaiser Hayward physical therapy residency in advanced orthopedic manual therapy. Loudon is also a certified manual therapist; she completed the level 1 residency program in manual therapy at the Ola Grimsby Institute in 1997.

As an author and researcher, Loudon has produced more than 40 publications as well as the first edition of The Clinical Orthopedic Assessment Guide. She serves as a reviewer for several journals and is a member of the editorial board for Journal of Athletic Training, Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, and the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.

Loudon is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, the National Athletic Trainers' Association, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She lives in Overland Park, Kansas, and enjoys jogging, biking, and golfing.

Stephania Bell, MS, PT, is a clinical assistant professor in physical therapy education at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Bell teaches advanced orthopedics and provides clinical services at the medical center's Sports Medicine Institute. In 1997, she completed a two-year program leading to certification in orthopedic manual therapy through the Ola Grimsby Institute. Bell is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists and the American Physical Therapy Association.

Marcie Swift, PhD, is a clinical assistant professor in the department of physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Swift received her PhD in rehabilitation science from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2007. She has also completed both a fellowship program and a mentorship program in orthopedic manual physical therapy at the Kaiser Permanente physical therapy residency in advanced orthopedic manual therapy.

In addition to her academic and clinical responsibilities, Swift teaches courses in musculoskeletal physical therapy and applied musculoskeletal anatomy.

good quick reference but could have some changes

This book is great to reference on how to perform joint mobs and special tests. There are some inconsistencies and a few errors that I have found throughout the book, and I wish there were better anatomy pictures. Great tables for a quick reference of clinical syndromes and muscle action, innervation, origin and insertions. Overall a good book to have especially while you're in school.

I ordered a used copy and received a brand new one!!

Human Kinetics has put together another great book. I needed an assessment book to help me understand about muscle dysfunctions as I work towards gaining my massage license.

Chapters include: Joint basics, range of motions, physiological limits, postures and gait, neurology, palpation's and clinical syndromes.

This book is easy to follow and use, and would recommend it to anyone.

Among the issues discussed are the use of confirmatory versus exploratory factor analysis, the use of principal components analysis versus common factor analysis, procedures for determining the appropriate number of factors, and methods for rotating factor solutions. Explanations and illustrations of the application of different factor analytic procedures are provided for analyses using common statistical packages (SPSS and SAS), as well as a free package available on the web (Comprehensive Exploratory Factor Analysis). About the Author

Leandre R. Fabrigar is Associate Professor of Psychology at Queen's University. He received his PhD in Psychology with a minor in Quantitative Psychology in 1995 from the Ohio State University. His primary research and teaching falls within the domains of attitudes, quantitative methods (including factor analysis and structural equation modeling), and psychological measurement. His research has been supported by grants from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre.

Duane T. Wegener is Professor of Psychology at the Ohio State University and held previous faculty positions at Yale University and Purdue University. He received his PhD in Psychology with a minor in Quantitative Psychology in 1994 from Ohio State University. His primary research and interests are in attitudes and social cognition. He also teaches undergraduate and graduate statistics and research methods. His research has been supported by grants from the U. S. National Science Foundation, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and U.S. National Institutes of Health. He received the Early Career Award from the American Psychological Association in 2001 for contributions to social psychology.

Great applied introduction and "how to" book for EFA

Fabrigar and Wegner have put together a short and sweet, but very effective introduction to exploratory factor analysis. The language used will be accessible to most readers with basic statistics training, and the book can be read front-to-back in an afternoon or two. The book places an emphasis on the application of EFA, and in that way can be thought of as a good "how to" resource of best practices in EFA. Nevertheless, the book does include a basic introduction to the conceptual math behind EFA for those who are looking for that sort of thing. Those with a strong background in quantitative psychology may not be satiated with this introduction, but for most practitioners of EFA, this material provides a brief, valuable and relatively harmless introduction of the matrix algebra involved in EFA. For those who have read Fabrigar's (1999) "Evaluating the use of exploratory factor analysis in psychological research", the book contains a many of the same recommendations. Readers will also likely enjoy the walk-through that the authors provide for adhering to these best practices in SPSS, SAS and CEFA (CEFA is a freely available EFA program; a great find for poor, struggling undergraduate/graduate students).

There were a few nit-picky aspects about the book that left me a bit disappointed. I would have liked the authors to have included Mplus in the section of EFA-able software packages they reviewed. EFA is Mplus is dead-simple to do, gives comprehensive output, and in some ways (in my opinion) is more powerful that SPSS/SAS/CEFA for EFA. One particular feature of Mplus that I think would have been valuable to cover is the use of robust maximum-likelihood estimators in EFA, which can help with some of the problems researchers run into when they try to conduct an EFA using indicators with normality problems.

A possibly more important critique, given this book's apparent target audience (i.e., psychology/social science researchers using EFA), is the absence of an example EFA results write-up. With so many analytical decisions to make, and so much output to consider, I could see many students/faculty wishing they had a good model to follow regarding the write up of their EFA results. I imagine this omission could be easily remedied by the authors in the future, by uploading an example results section to the book's website. To be clear, the book is great, but I do hope they consider this small addition to the book's website; I think it could really increase the impact their book would have. Researchers would not only be conducting quality EFAs, they would also be writing quality result sections.

In summary, I think Fabrigar and Wegener have written a fabulous book that would be valuable to any student or researcher who plans on using EFA. Advanced statisticians may not find it to be a comprehensive statistics bible, but then again, it's not intended to be. Instead, the book provides a quick and easy one-stop read for how to conduct a quality EFA in a variety of statistical packages, and how to interpret the results.

Only OK. Clear, but Redundant

I was looking for a short, high-level review of exploratory factor analysis. This book satisfied my need fairly well. At 153 pages, it was definitely short. The problem is that it could well have been 100 pages long and done as well. These authors are verbose and repetitive in the extreme. Just as a quick example, each chapter begins with a rather long overview of what will be covered in that chapter. The entire final chapter reviews what was covered in the previous 142 pages. And certain issues are introduced, reviewed, re-reviewed, re-re-reviewed throughout the body of the text. The authors seem to assume that their readers have quite short attention spans!

Suffice to say, Communist Occupied Russia saw fit in 1985 to sign a very friendly $14 billion trade agreement with America's new found Red Chinese "ally". Marine Lieutenant Robert G. LoPresti had to use worn-out equipment in a field hospital near Pleiku. Spare parts weren't available for the generators at the field hospitals. Nor was the proper medical equipment! Wounded marines died unnecessarily as a result. Upon returning to the United States, LoPresti found the Communists were being supplied massive quantities of the same spare parts and equipment needed in Vietnam by American forces! He revealed in January of 1969: "The same machinery I couldn't get, the same equipment that would have saved the lives of those marines was declared 'non-strategic' and shipped to the very countries that supplied the rifles and bullets that are killing our men! “I remember visiting the Sixty -Seventh Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon. “Walking through the intensive-care ward, I saw dozens of soldiers who had been maimed and mutilated. “They had lost arms or legs, they were covered with plastic and swathed in bandages stained deep red by their own blood. “Most were in agonizing pain or under heavy sedation. “I knew that many would not live and others would be crippled and disfigured for life. “Seeing this bitter fruit of our government's madness, I wondered how our politicians would try to explain to these men about sending 'non-strategic' items to an enemy that has pledged to destroy us." The "politicians" never bothered! Nor did any of them intend to! A new era in treason was begun within weeks after Senator Barry Goldwater lost his Presidential bid in 1964. The radicalized Johnson Administration officially sanctioned a traitorous trip to wheel and deal for expanded business behind the Iron Curtain. The Honorable Ezra Taft Benson correctly charged in 1968: "In the waiting rooms of the Kremlin, American businessmen dream of personal gains and profits while thousands of American boys in Vietnam are slain by Communist bullets made in the USSR." Yes, while the war in Vietnam raged the United States merrily aided, fed, traded with, loaned money to and armed America's avowed Communist enemies throughout the world.

Robert W. Pelton has been writing for more than 45 years on political and historical subjects. He has published more than 100 books including the sensational Unwanted Dead or Alive – The Greatest Act of Treason in Our History Mr. Pelton proudly claims a heritage going all the way back to well before the War for American Independence. One of his ancestors, John Rogers, came to America on the Mayflower and was one of 41 signers of the Mayflower Compact. Another, John Smith was one of the founders of Jamestown. Peleg Pelton served as the fifer in the Continental Army at age 17 during the Battle of Saratoga (1777) and again in Yorktown (1781). Captain Peter Hager was Commander of the Old Stone Fort in Schoharie, New York, in 1780. Mr. Pelton is a member of Sons of the Revolution (SOR), and Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).

easier than Knuth

For a maths student who has never before studied discrete maths, Koshy provides a good education. He takes you through several centuries of this field. At a very understandable pace. Many topics are covered. From Catalan numbers to (ancient) Egyptian multiplication to the eternal Goldbach conjecture on prime numbers.

Of course, much more recent ideas are covered. Like the Chinese remainder theorem, Euler's theorem, and public key cryptography, with a lengthy example given by the RSA cryptosystem. This is in one chapter developed to cryptology. No bad. But if your interest is this topic, you may desire a lengthier discussion, as in Stalling's book,

Cryptography and Network Security (4th Edition), or Spillman, Classical and Contemporary Cryptology.

Koshy's chapters also have the useful facet that the problems at the end of each chapter have a section on computer exercises. An acknowledgement that many of us come to this field fluent in computer programming, and perhaps with a need to use this maths in that context.

Koshy's book also overlaps with large portions of Knuth's classic volumes, "The Art of Computer Programming". But Koshy's pace of exposition is slower, and the examples are simpler to understand. For readers who might have tried reading Knuth and given up in frustration, perhaps consider Koshy for an easier read. Don't get me wrong. If you want to go seriously into number theory and computing, Knuth's books are classics. But to newcomers, Koshy could be more suitable.

One Of The Best

This is one of a series of cookbooks that Southern Living started publishing in 1979. I consider the entire series as the best cookbooks ever published. They consist of(mostly) recipes submited by home cooks to Southern Living and are recipes that they cook for family and friends. I use these cookbooks almostevery day to give me ideas for my home cook meals. I cannot recomend these cookbooks highly enough They cover the world of cooking better than books by famous chefs.

Very Detailed and Informative

I wish this book was recommended for business school. It would have made studying for exams much easier. The best parts about the book are:

(1) Descriptions and examples of various financial instruments
(2) Insights into the trading process
(3) A look into back office functions

A lot of the knowledge from this book cannot be derived in one course at school, and most schools do not teach about the backdrop behind the markets. Overall, a very useful book for business students, traders, bankers, and anyone interested the markets or finance in general.

A Guideline to Brokerage Firms and their Operations.

A great book to get a general overview of brokerage firms and their activities.

It goes into verbose details about all aspects of the fictional firm which may make it seem to others as dry but to me, it makes the concepts being explained very clear.
As of 2014, it might be dated (published in 2006) but still a good tool.

Not comprehensive enough and unfortunately outdated on marketplaces

The topics suggested by the title (settlement, etc) are well addressed, but the first half of the book is dedicated to marketplaces and here the book comes up short. Many recent market developments, even those that were in place at the time of writing, appear to be inadequately or inaccurately addressed. Examples:

ATSes/ECNs are much more center stage than the book would suggest and are not sufficiently discussed

Hybrid market mechanics are not discussed much

Dark pool liquidity is not addressed

Options market making is not addressed beyond a single paragraph that sheds no light into how Citadel et al make continuous markets electronically

And unfortunately, given that the major development of Reg NMS took place after the book, this makes the marketplace info even less useful.

About the Author
CARLI LLOYD is a co-captain of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year after leading the team to victory in the 2015 World Cup. The midfielder also scored the gold-medal winning goals in both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, before leading the team to the 2016 Games in Rio. She has played in three FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments, helping the U.S. win bronze in 2007, silver in 2011, and finally gold in 2015. She was awarded the FIFA Golden Ball and the Silver Boot in 2015. The New Jersey native currently plays for the Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League.

WAYNE COFFEY is an award-winning sports journalist and the author of more than thirty books, including such New York Times bestsellers as The Closer with Mariano Rivera; Wherever I Wind Up with R. A. Dickey; and Above the Line with Urban Meyer.

GREAT read

My daughter finished this book in two days, and it provided a lot of inspiration for her during an otherwise tough soccer season. Thank you Carli Lloyd for getting real in your book and showing us that despite setbacks and challenges, it is possible to press forward and achieve your goals and dreams!

Understanding soccer

I loved the book. I always thought Carli was a bit cold. This book proves otherwise. I loved reading about the hard work she put in to. She had set backs, but never gave up. But I believe it is soccer oriented . I don't believe those who have no soccer knowledge wouldn't appreciate as much as those who do. My daughters have played since the age of 5. One received a college scholarship. Soccer is brutal even from a young age. It is not for those who have thin skin

Respect her accomplishments, but more respect for the journey

Excellent long view story of hard work, self motivation and doubts with the back story that it's not just soccer and not just about you. Good example of working the plan and seeing that everything isn't as it always seems on the surface.
