If I Die Before I Wake

I love most of the books from Dear Canada and Dear America and this one is definitely one of them! It has a span of about 4-5 months during the worst part of the flu epidemic. The author has a good sense of humor and is a wonderful writer. I like her other book "Orphan at My Door".
I would definitely recommend this to others!

Heartwrenching

Jean Little's contributions to this series are exceptional and "If I Die Before I Wake" is no different. Little portrays life in 1918 Toronto vividly. The Spanish Flu Pandemic is, of course, the main theme but various other topics are also explored: the last year of WWI, Armistice Day, class distinctions, women doctors and the growing changes in women's freedom. General everyday life is explored deeply showing the great conveniences now available since the parent/grandparent's Victorian days and the hardships the reader will notice compared with modern day's easy use of technology. Fiona introduces us to her unique family consisting of multiple twins, widowed father and Aunt caretaker bringing great character development and a charming, lovely household that we grieve with when the obvious death(s) occur(s). I was surprised though because I thought clues were being given that a certain character would be the one who perished and I, thankfully!, was wrong. The book is better given to the older age range of this series (8-12) due to the amount of death and descriptions of the disease. The ending is satisfying enough but the usual epilogue which tells what happened to the characters after the book was unusually depressing. Also includes some good photographs at the end, though more seem to be from Alberta & Manitoba than Toronto, where the book is set.

Wonderful End!

I loved this end to a wonderful sequel. I was thoroughly entertained and loved each of the books for different reasons. I was glad that Ms. Beck gave this young man and this young lady a chance at a sequel. I purchased all the books in the series but was unable to review book #1 as it is no longer in paperback. I would have loved to review that book as it is EPIC. Very sad to have seen this happen. Great job on this one though! denise bailey

Really liked all the color photos

I was interested in learning about how shoes are made and decided to check out this book. This book really gave me the inside scoop I haven't seen a book that takes you inside a real shoe factory.

The book talks about shoe design and patterns and all the tooling needed to make shoes. Really liked all the color photos. The book is packed with technical terms and information. I really like this book, I found it very helpful!

Great introduction to product design and manufacturing

Interesting look into how shoes are made. Includes details that would be important for designers but also a great introduction to product design, manufacturing and distribution.

Not worth it.

While there is some good information in this book, it is not worth the $40 asking price. As a product developer looking to expand my knowledge base I found this book to be only somewhat helpful, to miss important things in some places, and to be simply wrong in others.

If you are writing a book on shoe design and development and you chose to include information about costing and import, then it is important to know that FOB means "Free On Board" not "Freight on Board" as the author states, and to know that FOB is the cost of a good up to the point where it passes the threshold of a shipping vessel at its port of origin, not "the price of the shoe, plus delivery in a shipping container to the port of entry in the USA." If you are in product development, this is pretty standard stuff that you should know. Getting information like this wrong is quite egregious and severely damages the book's credibility.

There are also plenty of things not covered in this book, or just glanced over. While the focus of the book is clearly on sneakers and athletic shoes, none of the most important tends of recent design are mentioned, such as the use of monofilament meshes, welded overlays, and newer foam compounds/foam additives.

Finally, overall the writing is fairly poor. The author's repetition of the same sentence within a paragraph, and sequential paragraphs that say effectively the same thing (often in the same words) are consistently irritating. Much worse than that is the atrocious copy editing - words that clearly have been auto-corrected and are wrong, poor punctuation, etc. If you are charging $40 for your book, then the execution really has to be top-notch. This is not.

Despite my overall negative impression of the book, I will certainly admit that I did learn a few things by reading it. The problem is that I had to wade through 250 pages in order to glean what amounts to 30-40 pages of good information (plus a decent glossary at the back).

Here are the complete texts of his early landmark collections, Notes of a Native Son (1955) and Nobody Knows My Name (1961), which established him as an essential intellectual voice of his time, fusing in unique fashion the personal, the literary, and the political. A great book -- A worthy part of a great series

I love James Baldwin--I think he's a tremendous writer, so Toni Morrison could hardly go wrong in selecting essays for this volume. All of the selections are excellent. Notes of a Native Son contains a touching eulogy for Richard Wright ("Alas, Poor Richard"), explaining the lonliness and problems Mr. Wright had at the end of his life. Baldwin displays his tremendous range as both a political commentator and a literary critic. The Devil Finds Work, in particular, is very insightful--and several parts humourous.
What I don't understand--and why I struck a star off this collection--is why Ms. Morrison did not include "Evidence of Things Unseen," Baldwin's analysis of the Atlanta child murders from the early eighties. Perhaps Library of America is planning later volumes of Baldwin's works--The companion volume to these essays is his "Early Novels," most notably "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "Giovani's Room." I can't imagine that Library of America would not produce a volume including Mr. Baldwin's later works--especially "Just Above my Head."
This particular edition is well worth having--despite the price. First, this is a good collection of Baldwin's essays, many of which are difficult to find. Second, the Library of America really does a commendable job in paper quality and binding. This is not a leather bound edition on 50 pound paper, so stiff you can't open it and printed so the back binding looks impressive on your bookshelf--this is tightly bound, cardboard cover that lies flat, and is easy to read. The paper is not heavy--but acid free, and tear resistant. The Library of America series are good collections that are meant to be read many times, by many people--these books hold up very well.
I am afraid that Mr. Baldwin's works and opinions may fall by the wayside as time passes. The fact that Ms. Morrison--one of our best and most respected authors--put these collections together will certainly help keep Mr. Baldwin's works alive. But if you have any interest in what it means to be African American--in the twenties, to contemporary america--through even tomorrow--You need to read and appreciate Mr. Baldwin's insights. And you will also enjoy his clear, careful, and pointed writing.

A book on de-bunking, not on morphometrics

Background: I have a strong background in mathematics and image processing. I was looking for a book that could re-introduce me to the field of morphometrics. I had done some basic land-mark morphometrics before and wanted to return to the field.

Contrary to its title, this book is not about morphometrics for the life sciences. It is about the Fourier Descriptors methods and about de-bunking any other method. The book is divided by the author in two parts. The first part is dedicated to the history of measurement with strong emphasis on the politics involved, particularly the role of the (Catholic?) Church. I found this first part mildly interesting for historical curiosity, but completely irrelevant to the current morphometrics knowledge. The second part of the book (Morphometric Techniqhes) is supposed to cover different methods for morphomety. It does not. The second part includes chapters on Multivariate Morphometrics (Chapter 7) and Coordinate Morphometrics (Chapter 8). These two chapters (both less than 20 pages long) are devoted to highlighting the drawbacks of multivariate and coordinate morphometrics without giving enough mathematical background for the beginner to learn about them or to form an educated assessment of the methods. Boundary morphometrics (Chapter 9) is dedicated mostly to Fourier descriptors, the author's specialty. The chapter is allotted more than 35 pages, includes a mathematical background lacking in in other chapters, and -in contrast to other chapters, it does not mention any drawbacks of the Fourier descriptors. The book overemphasises the "information preserving" property of Fourier descriptors at the expense of morphometric techniques designed to assess differences. The only useful information I found in this book was the list of references regarding the methods this book tries to debunk.

This may be the only book of its sort in print. Most morphometric texts are either very specialized or are becoming more of historical interest then having current applicability.
It is aimed at upper division and graduate students with an interest in morphometrics and can be used as textbook for a semester course in the subject. One does need a familiarity with mathematics; college algebra is the bare minimum to work thru the material, calculus is really required as is a course in applied statistics.
While a bit difficult in places (sometimes the way it is written, sometimes the difficulty of the material), the book is certainly worth reading and working your way thru. Master this book and you will be far more knoweldgable than most who claim to be active in morphometrics in biology or other fields.
