Self-aggrandizement at its largest!

I hated this book because of the way funeral directors and removal personnel are depicted. I've been in the business for many years and have yet to see anyone "take" (steal) a souvenir from the dead as he so casually described in the death of Marilyn Monroe. And then to make it worse, he gives it to his wife who then parades it out to shock and titillate their guests. Disgraceful! And we've handled many high-profile deaths and no one cruises the neighborhood as voyeurs to see where the deceased lived or died. Abbott obviously has a highly-exalted perception of himself but he's an absolute disgrace to the profession. He should stop capitalizing on the deceased and thumping his chest about what a success he and Hast made of their removal business. The potential was there for this book to be an interesting read but the writer ended up annoying and disgusting. If someone insists on buying this junk, PLEASE know that funeral professionals do not steal from the dead!

Great Read

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but it turned out to be fascinating and informative. I'm sure most Americans are coming around to the opinion that simple funerals, and especially cremation, are the best solution, but the history of funerals and traditions are revealing. I've attended funerals, starting with my Grandmother's traditional wake to a more recent simple service after cremation. Mr. Abbott gives one complete appreciation of all that goes into this business. His revealing story about Maryilyn Monroe convinces me that she met with an unexpected death.

I found this upon a recommendation from Find A Death site. This is one really really great book. Filled with tidbits (ohhhhh! the Marilyn Monroe death thing..worth the price of the book alone!!) Get it.written very well, funny, and lots of great pics

Beau Sia is the son of Chinese immigrants from the Philippines. An original cast member of the Tony award winning, Def Poetry Jam on Broadway, Beau has shared his work on stages all over the world at festivals, universities, and conferences. He is the author of, "A Night Without Armor II: The Revenge," has had roles in the films "Slam," and "Rachel Getting Married," and wrote the lyrics for the hip-hop musical "Krunk Fu Battle Battle." Toward the Genuine

When I first met Beau back in the mid 1990s he was in his late teens and reading at Paul Medina's coffee house on the Paseo in Oklahoma City. He was a star in his ability to entertain. Though some of the other local poets were put off by his hyperbolic self image, his audacity and his sharp wit always thrilled me.The one thing that was totally obvious at the time was how serious he was about becoming a poet. My advice to him was (and even though things have improved here, would still be) get out of Oklahoma as fast as you can--go to New York.

He started his film studies at NYU, became an instant favorite at the Nuyrorkian, made friends with Allen Ginsberg, and acted in his first movie (Slam). He was a cast member of Def Jam on Broadway and toured for several years. While I consider him a friend, he was busy, I was much older, in Oklahoma,and so we have never corresponded. I think I can objectively say his newest book "The Undisputed Greatest Write of All Time" is a wonderful accomplishment. His first book in fifteen years, he has gained depth and wisdom without losing his audacity. Marianne Moore wrote about poetry that:

"if you demand on the one hand,
the raw material of poetry in
all its rawness and
that which is on the other hand
genuine, you are interested in poetry."

This bit of verse by Ms Moore perfectly describes why I am "interested" in Beau Sia--he is both raw and completely genuine. His newest poems are very personal. . . because life is personal. I love this book and I love his publisher, Write Bloody Books. Beau's book will fill several slots on my Christmas list. I wish him and all a Happy New Year.

Honest, reflective and unapologetic, Beau Sia pushes towards an evolution more humane and more infinite, illuminating connections past, present, future, within a nonlinear relative continuum. Sometimes funny and always personal, Beau displays unmatched dexterity with unexpected and provocative strokes. This is a valuable work by an impeccable craftsman. This book is indeed a work of art. Compelling to the fact of just wanting to throw because it was so good. The poems in the book are so real and touching to your heart its an actual person. There are many dope parts of this book that make up this wonderful man. Beau Sia out did himself this time.

Daniel Kusswurm has over 30 years of professional experience as a software developer and computer scientist. During his career, he has developed innovative software for medical devices, scientific instruments, and image processing applications. On most of these projects, he successfully employed x86 assembly language to significantly improve the performance of computationally-intense algorithms or solve unique programming challenges. His educational background includes a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology along with an MS and PhD in Computer Science.

it was a good primer with a good level of detail

This book on Assembly covers a lot of the common uses of the language to date. Having had several years off of Assembly and returning, it was a good primer with a good level of detail. The source code is freely available and so far always compiles. The examples are well thought out and have a good progression of topics.

I would have given the book 4 stars save for the fact that there isnt a single exercise in the book left for the reader. And Assembly is certainly something that you shouldnt plan to develop ANY level of proficiency without sitting down and putting in the effort of failing until it just clicks. While this isnt meant to really be a text book, I would be much more excited about this book if, at the end of each chapter, there was even a minimal amount of directed programming exercises for the reader. Im learning a lot from this book, but Im now left to create my own worthwhile programming exercises, or search for them on the net--which is what I was doing before I bought the book.

I needed some good examples of how to set up data for and ...

I was looking for a publication that provided the right amount of preliminary background on modern Intel 80x86 microprocessors. The first two chapters struck the right balance. Moreover, I needed some good examples of how to set up data for and properly create SIMD (SSE) and AVX routines. Again, the author struck the right balance. I found this book provided a good mix of sample programs that demonstrated how to call inline assembly routines from C/C++ functions. Especially on target were the numerous, well laid out tables throughout the entire book. The price was right and all the 32- and 64-bit topics were right on the mark for me. Missing of course were sections on AVX2 (512-bit). Also, all the Appendices were missing in my book. I don't know if this was a misprint or what. The author referred to Appendix C several times in various chapters, but there were no Appendixes. Overall, I recommend this book for both novice and experienced assembly programmers. It contains good reference material.

Oh my! What a rollercoaster ride, Barrington and Amora take you through a wide range of emotions. At times I was angry at them and at times I wanted to scream at them. But you still feel the love they have for each other, even though mistrust is prevalent and seeking to destroy them. You will also see how fear can keep someone in bondage and cause someone to make decisions that are detrimental to them. They have so many misconceptions about each other, but there is hope. Barrington needs to keep trusting, depending and seeking God for his marriage. His simple prayers are amazing. Amora needs to realize that she is one of God's precious gems, she may see herself as damaged goods, but God sees His princess. An amazing story, I love books that feature married couples and how they overcome the things that try to destroy them.

Barrington and Amora are back! Vanessa Riley never disappoints me! She gives you a great love story with suspense!! Her characters are so complex but relatable, how she does that I have no idea LOL The couple are at a crossroads, It's s like they reverse roles since the 1st book. Amora to me was lost, hurt, damaged which is understandable but in this book she her insecurities made me want to shake her. In the first book you see a little bit of fire in her trying to break through but this 2nd book it shows up and disappears so quick you can't enjoy the real Amora! New characters are introduced with the old and I can honestly say I have no idea what to expect which makes Vanessa Riley an awesome writer in my opinion. But my favorite character would have to be Barrington, he is funny and confident in his abilities Except when it comes to his wife! He disguises his wounds way better than Amora but they are there and they are deep! I can not wait to see what happens next... Barrington has got me scared LOL... Because I am clueless on who he and Amora can trust....I received this book free from Gallium Optronics Publishing as part of their Book Review program in exchange for a honest review. Unveiling Love: A Regency Romance (A London Regency Romantic Suspense Tale Book 2) written by Vanessa Riley, is a great second episode to this series. We are following Amora and Barrington Norton through the struggles that they finally figured out they had in the first episode and now Amora has come to the point that she is tired of fighting for her marriage and her sanity, but Barrington wants to fight enough for both of them. Can they actually make this work? I wanted to reach into the book and cheer them on while they endure each day of struggles. Can’t wait to read the next episode of this story and find out how they end up and if this monster who has caused these problems is finally caught or if they will have to deal with these struggles the rest of their married life. I was gifted this book in exchange for my honest review.

“The Replacement” is a book that I really enjoyed. It brings to the surface two parallel stories: Anna’s and Mickey’s. Anna is a grown woman, who lives with her son but who is so narcissistic and buried in her own career and personal needs, she seldom cares about what her son is doing. Her mother, Marianne, is the one who takes care of the boy most of the time, so when the woman goes missing, Anna’s got more than one problem on her hands.
On the other hand, Mickey is about the sweetest kid you can imagine. Sadly, his father left him when his mother got sick and the woman became an alcoholic, abusing Mickey both mentally and physically. I really like how the author describes Mickey’s feelings; it gives us a different perspective on how an abused child thinks and feels. Because of an ugly episode that I won’t spoil for you, Mickey ends up doing something bad.
To me, it was pretty obvious from chapter 5 how Anna and Mickey’s stories are connected, but I still enjoyed reading the book because of its characters that show you just how complex the human mind really is.

It’s not the best book I’ve read

It’s not the best book I’ve read, but considering that this is an indie author and this is her first shot at a thriller, I actually enjoyed it. The plot is similar to what you’d find in a commercial thriller movie, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I found the story to be shorter than I wanted, I’d like the author to jam even more action into a novel of this genre. The story line is credible considering the multitude of psychopaths that are out there.
What I particularly liked is how the author describes Mickey’s childhood. The first chapters that bring forward Mickey’s life are quite emotional, maybe too emotional for a thriller. It’s amazing to see how a child can stay positive in such a difficult situation. It’s quite inspiring even to adults such as myself. I feel like the action at the ending could be longer, it all seems to be happening so fast. I also wish the author would have made a more in-depth analysis on the true reasons behind the killer’s behavior. However, if you’re an experienced reader of thrillers, it all makes sense.

Interesting novel worth reading

I am not an avid reader of thrillers, but I did enjoy this book. It is not especially innovative in its plot, but it will keep you reading.
The characters of Anna and Mickey are well fleshed out, despite that the book is relatively short for this type of story. There are some plot twists, but I won't spoil that. I was able to see where the ending is going, but maybe that is just me. I don't know if this book will be satisfying to the more experienced readers of this types of stories, but I mostly liked it.

William Terry Couch (1901-1988) began his four-decade publishing career building the University of North Carolina Press into one of the nation's leading university presses. His editorial attacks on the social ills of the South earned him a reputation as a southern liberal. By the 1940s, his disaffection with New Deal politics turned him toward the right, resulting in his 1950 firing as director of the University of Chicago Press.

As a conservative, Couch sought books and articles that would sway general readers from what he saw as an intellectual torpor that accepted the growing role of government in American life. The liberals who controlled the presses found him dogmatic and irascible. When he tried to turn Collier's Encyclopedia into a journal of conservative opinion, he was fired as editor in chief in 1959. He ended his career as publisher for the libertarian William Volker Fund, which collapsed in the 1960s under charges of Nazism.

Couch was committed to publishing as a social cause and strove to disturb American complacency. This is the first book-length biography of Couch--a publisher who brought academic scholarship to the reading public to effect social, political and economic change.

A Fascinating Biography of a Book Publisher

William Terrence Couch is well known to students of Southern culture but almost unknown to others. Similarly, while one assumes he would be well known by historians of American conservatism for his work at the University of Chicago Press and afterwards, he is not even mentioned in the nine hundred page American Conservatism: An Encyclopedia, the extensive American Conservatism: The First Complete Guide, or The Concise Conservative Encyclopedia, whose title is misleading in its modesty. Hopefully, Shiflett’s book will make him better known to all those interested in American cultural history, particularly the book world.

Couch wanted university presses to issue books for the “general reader,” not merely a small group of scholars. Hard-headed and contentious, he battled with almost everyone throughout his long career. Moreover, at the University of North Carolina, he created enemies because of his liberalism; later, as he moved politically to the Right, he was pilloried for this at the University of Chicago Press and afterwards. He locked horns with some of the most prominent scholars and thinkers of his time, like H.W. Odum and Robert Hutchins.

Those who have worked in publishing or academia will smile knowingly at some of the institutional politics which engaged him. Those who have been politically committed will be fascinated by his intellectual battles in that area.

Shiflett’s scholarship is impeccable. Based on an enormous amount of work with published material, archival manuscripts, and personal interviews, this book is extremely well written. He is fastidiously objective on controversial subjects which would have most lesser authors displaying their own views.

This is not the sole book written by Shiflett. Some years ago he wrote a highly readable work on the history of college and university libraries in the United States. It remains the best study of this important subject and I recommend it highly.

With the growth of “progressive” political invective and post-modernist babble among university-based historians, it is a pleasure to read solid works like his.

ASWATH DAMODARAN is Professor of Finance at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Training Wheels for Valuation . . .

This book echoes some of the author's earlier works but whereas his other books are largely geared towards professional practitioners, The Little Book of Valuation is targeted at individual investors.

In my opinion, Damodaran has carved a unique niche among authors of this genre. As a professor at a respected university, his books always draw on a solid theoretical foundation. A lot of other authors do the same. Where I think he distinguishes himself is the ability to bring pragmatic, real world slant to these topics. I have found his publications to be very readable yet hardly "dumbed down". In fact, I think this particular volume would make a great introduction on valuation for aspiring MBAs and finance students.

The Little Book of Valuation starts by explaining the nuts and bolts of finance including topics such as time value of money and the concept of risk. A short explanation of financial statements is also included. Damodaran then goes on to describe intrinsic valuations including the subtle differences between cash flows to equity holders versus cash flow to the firm. Along with that the appropriate discount rates that apply to each are also explained. The book then quickly compares intrinsic valuation to relative valuation methodologies, stressing along the way the merits and disadvantages of each. When using multiples (price/earnings, price/book, price/sales) to do comparative valuations, he points out which financial metrics are the underlying drivers for each multiple.

From there, the book delves further into subtopics such as valuing companies at different stages in their life cycles: early stage companies, mature companies and declining companies. There are also separate chapters that discuss valuation issues/techniques for banks and other financial entities, cyclical/commodity companies and a final chapter on valuing companies with significant intangibles.

While the nature of the "Little Book" series means that they will be succinct and perhaps a little light on mind-numbing detail, I think this particular volume provides a very readable, even-handed approach to the topic of valuing financial assets. Damodaran consistently provides examples after he makes a point. Furthermore, the examples are real life rather than hypothetical situations.

I struggled to get through the Copeland tome on Valuation. I wish Professor Damodaran had published his Little Book of Valuation years earlier . . . it would have been like having a nice set of training wheels to get me started . . . .

Good introduction, but lacks depth for the practitioner

If you want a short and lightweight introduction to the subject and have basic compound interest and financial statement analysis this book is useful. If you are looking for more than an introduction/overview then the book lacks some depth. It is short, clearly written, and covers the ground with minimal mathematics. I do recommend it as an introduction and overview of the subject area. However, if you can't do basic compound interest or have not looked at basic financial statement analysis it would be helpful to brush up on these topics before using this book to get into valuation.

For knowledgeable readers the book is less useful. To much time is spent presenting an answer on the mechanics of valuing a company and not enough time is spent on the nuances, tradeoffs, and implications of various valuation assumptions. The mechanics are important, but the book does not really grapple adequately with some of the big difficulties in valuation, which include the selection of discount rates and estimation of terminal value. For example, there is no discussion on merits or otherwise of using the average weighted cost of capital (AWCC) for discounting or presenting any alternatives. I don't claim that the approach is wrong just that it carries certain implications that deserve discussion.

Risk is dealt with simplistically through the discount rate, which is not inherently bad, but alternative actuarial approaches exist that I personally think deserve discussion, if only to inform the reader of the scope of the subject matter. Finally, success is as much about managing risk as it is about placing a value on a business. I feel that this most important point is lost.

Is the book worth reading? Absolutely. However, if you are hoping for a tool kit that will provide you with crystal ball to gaze on the future then you are surely going to be disappointed, because none exists.

Too much theory, not enough practical value

The author is a noted valuation author with several other books, much more indepth than this one. As an introduction to security valuation, it's good enough to get the job done, but I take issue with some of his methods.

Pros:
- Explains with clarity the different types of discounted cash flows (annunities, perpetuity, etc).
- Gives good explanation as to the significant metrics behind valuation multiples (ROE in PE, etc, Net PM in P/S, etc).
- Details why you should use historical averages, and not simply the most recently available metric for these calculations.
- Financial institutions are notoriously hard to value, and his method here is probably the best I've come across.

Cons:
- My biggest complaint is his over-reliance on CAPM beta as a risk-metric. Numerous studies have shown that stocks with low betas routinely out-perform those with high betas, which is the exact opposite of what's supposed to happen, according to financial theory. In fact, the author even briefly glosses over why beta may not be a great metric to use, but then continues to do so through out the entire book. As Buffett says, any time you see finance use a Greek symbol, they're substituting theory for experience.
- Doesn't give any alternatives to beta (WACC is no better, as it also includes beta) towards measuring risk. Should ignore beta completely and simply use the average market return over the past 200 or so years of 8 - 10% (I typically use 9).
- The regression analysis part seems completely out of place in a book like this.
- Likewise, his over-reliance on DCF is borderline absurd. Again, numerous studies have shown that most PROFESSIONAL analyst fail to accurately predict a firm's earnings over a short-term horizon (David Dremen has published many of these studies), so to assume a non-professional investor can with even remote accuracy predict cash flows 10 years into the future is ridiculous.

Overall, it's good for an introduction on discounting cash flows and being able to value a financial institution, but his use of beta and 10 years worth of forecasting is what holds this down.
