Paul Johnson says that writing A History of the Jews was like writing a history of the world "seen from the viewpoint of a learned and intelligent victim." Johnson's history begins with the Bible and ends with the establishment of the State of Israel. Throughout, Johnson's history is driven by a philosophical interest: "The Jews," he writes, "stand right at the centre of the perennial attempt to give human life the dignity of a purpose. Does their own history suggest that such attempts are worth making? Or does it reveal their essential futility?" Johnson's history is lucid, thorough, and--as one would expect of almost any project with such a broad scope--a little wrong-headed. By the end of the book, readers will be grateful for Johnson's questioning of the Jews' confidence in their cosmic significance. However, readers may also be a little annoyed by his energetic inquiries as to whether this significance was man-made or providentially provided. Either way, it's a given: for a historian of Israel, this should adequately settle the question. Less a seminal contribution than a distillation of a wide range of sources, this history of the Jews focuses on their four-millennia interplay with, and adaption to, other, often hostile, civilizationsa "world history seen from the viewpoint of a learned and intelligent victim." Weaving biblical and archeological data, Johnson (Modern Times and A History of Christianity is particularly deft at placing the patriarchs and early Israelites (the Bronze Age through the destruction of the First Temple) in their historical context. His dense, somewhat arbitrary, capsule extols Judaic rational scholarshipwhich contributed to ethical monotheism and the 18th-century economic system, in turnand denigrates mystic kabbalah"heresy of the most pernicious kind." Although Johnson, who seeks to acknowledge "the magnitude of the debt Christianity owes to Judaism," traces "an inherent conflict" between the religion and the state of Israel through the various ages, the work is incontrovertibly sympathetic to Zionism. Famous author-historian Johnson ( Modern Times, LJ 5/1/83; A History of Christianity, LJ 7/76) presents a provocative history of the Jewish people, religion, and culture from earliest times to the present. Astutely divided into seven sections, (Israelites, Judaism, Cathedocracy, Ghetto, Emancipation, Holocaust, and Zion), the work describes the complex interplay between Jewish and world history and shows how the course of Western civilization has been immensely influenced by this numerically small group. It's no mean feat to successfully compress 4000 years of history into 645 pages, but Johnson has more than met the challenge. Despite a few reservationsE. G. Johnson's theories regarding Jesus and the incipient Christian movement are debatablethis is an excellent, nonscholarly history for general readers. Highly recommended for public libraries. Robert A. A Saga Of Four Thousand Years!

This is my third book by British historian Paul Johnson. There is no question that he is an extremely talented writer and an excellent but opinionated historian. As always this combination makes for a lively and exciting read. Johnson states in the introduction that, as a believing Christian, he feels he owes much to the Jewish people who he greatly admires. He therefore felt that he wanted to write a complete history. It proves that a good Jewish history does not need to be written by a Jew. Johnson divides Jewish history into a series of epochs, each one of which consumes a part in the book. The chapters are called "Israelites" which covers the biblical period, "Judaism" which covers the period from the building of the Second Temple through the early Christian and early Islamic period, "Cathedocracy" in which Johnson deals with the experience of the Jews under medieval Christendom and Islam, "Ghetto" which deals with the late Medieval and Renaissance period in Europe. "Emancipation" which discusses the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe, "Holocaust" which needs no further explanation and "Zion" which covers not only the birth of modern Israel but also the post-war Jewish experience world wide.
This book is enormously detailed and highly opinionated. Johnson's affection for the Jewish people shines through on virtually every page. Never one to hedge on a conclusion, Johnson has opinions on everyone from Abraham to Begin. My favorite chapter was the opening one, "Israelites". Here Johnson attempts to use similarities between biblical descriptions and known facts of other ancient civilzations to demonstrate that the bible, from Abraham forward is essentially historical. This section will be of enormous interest to everyone, whatever your knowledge of the bible. The Jewish saga is the human saga. It is complete with pathos, absurdity, tragedy and triumph. It is remarkable that an ancient people could survive under such hostile conditions. Really a miracle. Johnson captures the essence of that miracle. The entire book will be of interest to those with less than complete knowledge of Jewish history. It will also be excellent reading for those who have a good knowledge of Jewish history because of Johnson's excellent writing ability. This book is well worth the money.

The best one-volume Jewish history book, period!

As an Orthodox Jew, an "insider", I was absolutely (and positively) amazed to see an "outsider", like Mr. Johnson, penetrate through the layers of confusion and misunderstandings and really "gets it". In the words of Rabbi Berel Wein (a contemporary Jewish historian), "Mr. Johnson did a much better job than many secular Jewish historians". There are many things I disagree with in this book but more often then not I found myself nodding in agreement and underlining key sentences. All this is my commentary on the CONTENTS of the book, when it comes to lucidity, choice of words and philosophical depth, well... Brilliant is putting it mildly. This book is a must-read for Jews and non-Jews alike!

One of the best histories of the Jews

I have read histrories of the Jews by at least half a dozen authors and I rate Johnson's as the best. Just as he successfully captured the character of the American people in "A History of the American People," so too, he captures the essence of Judaism, it's culture and history. What is remarkable about these two works is he is not an American (he's English) nor Jewish (he's Roman Catholic) yet observing from the "outside," he does great justice to both America and to Jews. I consider myself to be well versed in Jewish history and traditions. I am well read on the subject and, indeed, I have taught a college course in Judaism (at Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY). I find Johnson's views to be insightful and his facts to be laid out with no glaring errors. Starting in prebiblical times and continuing to the present, he tells a remarkable story. If you read only one history of the Jews, you would do well to select this one.

Erudite, Gripping and Fresh Interpretation of Aristotle.

Francis Sparshott is an excellent poet as well as an excellent philosopher, and his command of language and his depth of insight are both highly manifest in this book. Sparshott has given here the best modern overall commentary on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, itself possibly the greatest of Aristotle's works. In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle brings the perspective of a great observational biologist to bear on the observation of the human, in order to assess what our natural needs and capacities are, and what we need to do in order to have a fulfilling life. Aristotle's answer is, of course, subtle and complex, but it is summed up in Sparshott's title: we need to take our lives seriously. Sparshott's text demonstrates at every point the depth of insight developed over decades of thinking along with Aristotle (and, of course, along with lots of other philosophers) about these issues of human life. The result is a book that is simultaneously *brilliant* in its bringing together of Aristotle's texts and profound in its commentary on human experience. The first 50 pages are the most mind-blowing, and they should be read carefully by all students of Aristotle, to be sure, and by anybody else studying philosophy. Whenever I teach graduate courses in Aristotle, I assign this book as a companion text, because, (whereas I find that commentaries usually have the effect of lowering the level of initiative that the students take in studying the original books), this book always leads the students to be more probing and more thoughtful in their approach to Aristotle's texts. I recommend it very highly.

What's a tattoo book without pictures?!

I was really excited to read this book, and the stories are pretty neat, but I was completely bummed that there's not one single picture of a tattoo included! At the end of every story, I wanted to see how that chick's tat turned out...and had nothing to look at. Neat concept, but really lacking.

EYE OPENING WITH AN OPEN MIND

I have to admit-this was more interesting than I thought it would be. You see, being a mother we have and WANT to be included in the realm of our children's interests no matter how far off the wall they may seem (as long as it's legal of course) I do not have any tattoos and although I'm old enough to know NEVER SAY NEVER I don't have any plans on getting one. I read 1-2 stories a day in-between my busy schedule and now I find myself talking with the young girls I work with about THEIR's and they all DO have a story and meaning behind what they chose to have inked on them permanently. I never would have thought of that BEFORE reading the book. Realizing this opens a door for conversation with someone that maybe would not have been there before. I do recommend reading it-yes I would have liked to see some pictures too, but maybe the publishers will oblige with the NEXT book by this editor, my daughter.

Finally a Book That Tells Our Story

This book is a wonderful collection of stories from real, everyday women who have ink and are not freaks for it. It gives voice to those who proudly carry ink, even if we sometimes have to cover it to maintain propriety in an office setting. It even helps those who are not inked and have preconceived notions about inked women understand where we are comming from.
I have been inked for several years, to the great distress and/or confusion of family and friends. I was the only one in my family to have ink until two months ago, and very few friends of mine have any. I have actually given this book as a gift to family to help them see that it isn't so radical after all.
I have always been interested in tattoos in an anthropological way as well, and this book gives great insight into the "why" so many different women get inked, and why they have no shame in their art. It shows how very false the taboos surrounding women and tattoos are.

Words can't even describe how amazing this book is! The character detail is astonishing, makes it easy to imagine the character. You can never say "One more Chapter", the cliff hangers make you want to come back for more! I've laughed, I've cried and I fell in love with this book! Kudos on an amazing job J C! Can't wait to read more of your work!

I have loved this story from finding it prior to it being posted on the writers blog, she kept the readers on the edge of their seats waiting to see what would happen next. This story is the first book in a series, I am looking forward and waiting to see if the other stories in the series are published. I have read this story from front to back and am now reading it for the second time. J. C. Gordon is a wonderful writer.

Love this story. Been reading J C Gordon's work before it was being published. There isn't a story out their of Gordon's that I don't love. This is the best action packed, romance enhanced, complex story with the best twist to keep you guessing. And don't worry, it will end with you begging for more! As paranormal novels go, you could ask for better.

An Extensive Reference

This is the second volume in The Cambridge History of Japan, covering from the founding of Heian-kyo in 794 to the Gimpei clan wars of 1185 and the rising dominance of the warrior class. Arguably, these are the formative years for Japanese culture and social structure. Many of the subtle forms of governance that endured into modern times were entrenched at this time. Art and religion flourished as well (this was the period in which The Tale of Genji was written).
The Heian era, marked by a tremendous amount of formative activity, are crucial to understanding all that followed. This text is as exhaustive a record and analysis of those times as any reader would ever want. The chapters are written by individual experts in their fields and cover key aspects of history, politics, sociology, religion, and art. If anything, the worst criticism of this text is that the amount of information provided is overwhelming.
Casual history buffs beware. Don't expect an easy to read narrative. The intended reader is either academic or deeply interested. The kind of person who doesn't mind information overload and who is willing to take the time to put all the pieces of the picture into place. It may be important to understand rice politics, but, for the average reader, the subject lacks the glitter of the Heian court and the conflicts that forged modern Japan.
Of course, this is intended to be a reference book as much as a history, which accounts for the dryness of some of the writing. But as a reference book it really shines - I have yet to look for something and not be able to find material. For the right reader, the book is well worth its steep price.

It's the most detail publication on Heain era in Japan!

If one is looking for a manual that can help him/her understand historical events in Heian period (794-1185) then this is the book. It brings to you in detail the system of government (copying China's Tchang dynasty model), introduction of new Buddhist sects to Japan (Tendai, Shingon) and the life / culture at the Imperial Court in Heiankyo (contemporary capital). What may scare one off is the price but if you're either deeply interested in Japan's history or want to know more than you can find in the general popular history books then be sure to add this piece to your bookself and it will bring the Heain Japan to your reading chair. Index and glossary are practically arranged.

The Most Comprehensive English History of the Heian Period

This is an outstanding reference for anyone interested in Heian Japan. I don't recommend it as an introduction to the era, for that I would rely on a more narrative history like George Sansom's "A History of Japan to 1334" or Ivan Morris' "The World of the Shining Prince," but as an add-on to something like that, this book is excellent. It is made up of a series of articles by noted experts, each article covering some aspect of Heian period life. They do a good job of covering almost every aspect of the period. I am working on a novel set in Japan in the late Heian, and I found the articles on rural life and the shoen particularly interesting.

There is also material here that I have never seen anywhere else. My novel takes place during the Hogen rebellion, a brief conflict between two factions of the Imperial family vying for control of the throne. The principals in the conflict were the Junior Retired Emperor Sutoku and his brother, Emperor Go-Shirakawa. The roots of the conflict lay in the choices of their father, the Senior Retired Emperor Toba. As the Senior Retired Emperor, he wielded enormous influence on the government. In fact, he forced his son, Sutoku, to retire as emperor so as to put another son, Konoe, on the throne. Sutoku resented this. When Konoe died, it was assumed that Sutoku's oldest son would become Emperor, but Toba put Go-Shirakawa on instead. This increased Sutoku's discontent.

When Toba died, Sutoku gathered soldiers in an effort to overthrow Go-Shirakawa. He was ultimately unsuccessful, but the event marks the beginning of the ascendancy of the warrior class in Japanese governmental affairs.

Now, all of this is very inside baseball, and even though I have studied it fairly extensively, I always had a hard time trying to determine the motivations here. It was never very clear as to why Toba seemed so intent on ensuring that Sutoku never gained power. While I was looking through the section on the Hogen Rebellion in The Cambridge History of Japan, I came across a casual mention of the fact that, in the Imperial Court, it was widely believed that Toba was mocked about the parentage of his son, Sutoku. When Toba was a child, the chief power in the government was his grandfather, Retired Emperor Shirakawa. Shirakawa placed Toba on the throne when Toba was 4 years old. At age 14, Shirakawa arranged for Toba to marry a girl of 16 who Shirakawa had adopted as his daughter. She soon gave birth to a son. It was widely believed that the father of that child was not Toba, but his grandfather, Shirakawa. When the child was 4 years old, Sutoku forced Toba off the throne and had the boy enthroned as Emperor Sutoku. Shirakawa was very close to the young emperor, and favored him over his grandson, Toba. This explains Toba's enmity towards Sutoku and his efforts to cut him off from any chance at power.

I have been studying Japanese history for years, and I have read a lot about the Heian period. The Cambridge History of Japan is the only place I have seen this information even alluded to. Since I am using the Hogen Rebellion as the backdrop for a novel, you can imagine how delighted I was to come across a story like this. Never in a thousand years would I have thought of a situation this tawdry and scandalous. It adds immensely to the backstory of the novel. But, if it weren't for the Cambridge History of Japan, I never would have discovered it.

Very thorough account of those Spaniards who came after De Soto

Very enjoyable account of the last Spanish expeditions into the Catawba uplands connecting the fuller writings of De Soto's chroniclers with the most up-to-date research as to who was visited and at what locations at that time.

A good book. Well written. Easy to read.

A good account of a little-known Spanish expedition through the US Southeast.

Recommended for people who think de Soto was the only Spaniard to enter the interior of Dixie. You will learn something. Has several insights that help to understand just where de Soto really went and when, with excellent background on the people that he met.

Spanish and Indians in the Carolinas

Charles Hudson is perhaps the best scholar to read about the interaction of Indians and Spanish in the American Southeast during the 16th century. His book about De Soto's route is definitive. This book concerns the nearly-forgotten expeditions of Juan Pardo through the Carolinas and across the Appalachians to Tennessee in 1566,67,and 68. Included in the book are the official accounts in Spanish of Pardo's expeditions plus English translations.

Pardo visited several of the same Indian cities as De Soto had thirty years earlier and thus we have two sources regarding such places as Cofitachequi, Joara, and Coosa. When De Soto reached Cofitachequi -- few miles east of present-day Columbia, SC, it was aleady in decline, having suffered from a plague -- almost certainly of European origin. By Pardo's time, the powerful Chiefdom was on its last legs. Within a few years, the complex societies seen by the early Spanish would cease to exist to be replaced by the much depopulated and simpler societies of the historic Creek, Cherokee, Catawba and other Indian tribes.

Hudson pieces together linguistic and archaeological data as well as nuggets from the tiresome accounts of the expedition by Pardo's legalistic notary to portray the Indians Pardo met. One interesting feature of Pardo's expeditions compared with De Soto's is that Pardo had few battles or adventures, got along well with most of the Indians he met, and none of his men were killed or died.

There is little information about the Indians of the Southeast at the time of first contacts with the invading Europeans. Pardo's is one of the most useful and least fanciful accounts that we have and Hudson's interpretation of it is almost surely the best that can be found.
