I have been reading again Mass Dreams of the Future by Chet Snow which I had mentioned to you. Bottomline: there is reason to believe that the earth’s population will decrease by as much as 95% this century--exact cause unknown. These mass hypnotic sessions foresaw many things, such as 9/11, fukushima, the Japanese tsunami, the apple watches, payments by smart phone A woman mentions teaching a class and having documents show up via ‘teleportation’--this would have been how the internet would be described in 1983. They also pick up again and again, gender fluidity and do not understand that and react with alarm (this is 1983) when someone reports a sex change operation. Already we understand that.

Because they pick up so many other correct items there is reason to believe that the huge decrease in population that they see by end of this century is also correct. In the book, lots of people are on horseback, though there is some radio and electric (locally). Government is spotty. Not the end of the world but the end of the age and the end of most of what we call civilization. By 2300 population only at 12 % of current, whereas 2100 is 5% .

I cannot do 5 stars because the 80s analysis is annoying. Also the dates are wrong. One cannot get dates accurately from the timeless imo. But it is suggestive of a future we should take into account.

Mass Dreams of the Future

I read this book and viewed it as a work of fiction. To view it any other way is a crock. According to the book, we are now living in a survivalist wet-dream of a post-apocalyptic ice-age world in a state of total anarchy and social breakdown. Look around you. Didn't happen. The "dreams" are nothing more than the subconscious of the "dreamers" indulging in fantasy role-playing, with touches of Jack London's "The Scarlet Plague" and George R. Stewart's "Earth Abides."

Don't just give this book a pass--go long and give it a forward pass into the nearest trashbin.
In 3000 AD it will still be in a landfill. It's so bad bacteria won't touch it.

Had potential but just fell short for me

It's not easy for me to write a negative review. As a creative in a different arena, I understand how much goes into expressing yourself in such a public way, you are laying yourself bare for all to see and comment on, and I appreciate the courage that takes. Having said that, we all look for different things in our books and this is just my opinion, which goes against many of the reviews on here.

Firstly, what I liked about this book.
I liked the premise of the story, the way the author wove the main characters stories together. It was set up well, and opened up opportunities for emotional attachment and angst. I also could envisage the setting and atmosphere of the town.I liked the main characters friendship groups and what they added to the story and I can see there is potential for the author to continue this series with their stories.

Sadly, as the story went on I felt bogged down by too much inner dialogue, particularly from the heroine, her 'rules', and her manner, which caused me to disconnect from her as the story progressed. She began to annoy me with her flip flopping of emotions and poor decision making. I felt some of it was there just to create unnecessary angst and ended up making her look weak and immature. I understood how her past had effected her but, in the end I lost interest in her HEA.

Grey, on the other hand, I felt more of a connection to than Avery, but still missed the total connection that I look for. I thought he was open and honest. He showed his vulnerability, even when Avery was not willing to do the same. I had to wonder though, if attraction and lust would be enough to overcome the obstacles they had in the beginning, knowing what they did and what it meant for their budding relationship. I'm not sure I would have pursued a relationship in that situation until the issue between us was somewhat more resolved.

Overall, this book had potential but it just fell short for me. I thought that some of the situations were added or drawn out unnecessarily. Some just took the focus away from their developing relationship and the ability for the reader to form a strong bond with the main characters. The ending felt rushed and Grey forgave Avery far to quickly for my liking. I didn't want him to drag it out, but he did a complete 180 in the space of 5 minutes that I felt was unrealistic. And then the book ended. I would have liked an epilogue. And I would have liked someone to stand up to Avery's overbearing father. It just felt unfinished to me.

This was an interesting twist as far as the plot goes. If anyone, other than the hero, had one ounce of maturity, it might have gone somewhere. But instead we had the hapless brother, the bully father, the invisible mother, the playboy best friend, the repentant ex, the immature best friend, and finally a heroine who blew in the wind. Story was slow, the romance inconceivable and too many annoying sideline characters

Challenges, obstacles and loyalty...

Grey Lowell runs a backcountry skiing expedition company called Backtrax in the San Juan mountains of Colorado. He lives in the small town of Sterling Canyon and loves grape lollipops.

He sees a woman across a room and nicknames her Bambi, little realizing what an impact this woman will have on his life. Right after seeing (and becoming interested in this woman), Grey is hit and injured by a drunk driver.

When he goes in for PT, he finds out that Avery Randall aka Bambi is his occupational physical therapist - and also the sister of the drunk driver.

I liked the locale - the southwestern part of Colorado is one of my favorite places. In fact, we just got back from vacation there so I was really able to visualize the area as I was reading about it.

Grey is almost too good to be true. And Avery definitely has some issues. Questions are raised about give and take in relationships and also about loyalty - to your family and to your significant other.

But I liked the story and the romance. The ending was a bit rushed and I would have like an epilogue for this story. I think it is the first story in a Sterling Canyon series, though, so I imagine there will be more about the pair in future books.

Home at Last

After years of waiting, I finally held a copy of Home Work: Handbuilt Shelter by Lloyd Kahn in my hands. I have rarely been this enthusiastic about a book, and not just because I am in it!

Ever since his first publication of Shelter in 1973 (which I also contributed to), Lloyd has been collecting imagery and stories for this eventual sequel. Shelter, a black and white over-sized catalog of unusual building, has become legendary as a book of inspiration for several generations of free-spirited home builders. The fact that it is still in print after 30 years attests to the durability of its significance. This seminal book heralded the emergence of geodesic domes and strawbale homes, as well as the influence of vernacular building styles from around the world on North American architecture.

With Home Work, Lloyd has gone beyond the glory of his earlier work in many ways. Not only does it seem more comprehensive, but it is almost entirely in color. This is a sumptuous coffee table book that will likely not spend much time on the table, since it is so intriguing you just want to pick up and browse through it. Every page is chock full of fun, unusual, lyrical, quaint, artistic, humble, elegant, practical, colorful, whimsical, well-crafted, funky, traditional, and outlandish buildings that were lovingly built by the hands of those who reside there. All of this is presented with Lloyd's casual style of layout and commentary that is reminiscent of a scrap book. Many of the photos are actually collages of several exposures spliced together to create expansive murals.

Flipping through the pages of Home Work will take you back to the early day of hippie huts and forward to the cutting edge of natural building technology. The builders themselves are portrayed as lovingly as their buildings, with many profiles of fine craftsmen and women sprinkled throughout. In fact, the book begins by featuring the work of ten artisans who represent some of the best in this tradition of owner-builders. Then a whole slew of other specific homes are displayed in such a way that the lifestyle of their occupants is embedded directly within the imagery. This book depicts far more than architecture; it shows entire ways of life.

Half a dozen people who have dedicated their lives to the promotion of natural building are profiled, along with some of the fruit of their labors. It is in this section that my wife and I find ourselves, with a description of our earthbag/papercrete home. What an honor it is to be part of such a fine work of art as this book. We are in the company of Bill and Athena Steen, Catherine Wanek, Ianto Evans and Linda Smiley, and others.

Lloyd has included examples of a variety of world-renowned photographers whose work graces the pages with imagery from India, Mongolia, Togo, Indonesia, Vietnam, Venezuela, New Guinea, Greece, Hong Kong, Nepal, Bali, Germany, Thailand, and Turkey, among other places. The way these exotic places are merged with the more familiar North American imagery makes everything seem exotic, or in another way of seeing, it all seems quite normal.

There is a section of buildings that derive their inspiration from fantasy and whimsy. This includes the surprising and almost garish flying concrete work of Steve Kornher in Mexico, along with a sculptural home carved out of the Arizona desert created by Michael Kahn, Lloyd's cousin. A Nevada house made of recycled glass bottles contrasts with delicate tropical treehouses in Hawaii and China.

Then we go on the road with Lloyd, as he chronicles trips that he made over the last 30 years. He photographed country homes that caught his eye along the Mississippi River, lovely and simple architectural elegance in Nova Scotia, old farm buildings of Utah and Nevada, tropical abodes in Costa Rica, and simple living in Baja California.

Continuing with the tradition that Lloyd established in the original Shelter book, there are a bunch of images of unusual housecars or rolling residences. My original school bus home was featured in the first book. This time there is a donkey train pulling a rolling homestead, complete with goats and chickens. There are several gypsy wagons, both self-propelled and not. There is log home on wheels, as well as various buses and vans. Lots of fun.

A chapter on living lightly features descriptions and diagrams of tipis, yurts, tents, make-shift structures, and traditional native American homes. There is enough information in these pages to be able to construct many of these dwellings.

Another love that Lloyd manifests is for old barns of all types. There are photos and diagrams of many of these fine buildings. In fact old buildings of all sorts attract his eye, and we see them from Oregon to Nepal, and from Hungary back to California, where Lloyd still resides in a funky little place on the coast of Marin County. Lloyd Kahn Understand You.

This is the best book of it's type that I have encountered. There are a lot of people out there building interesting structures with their own hands in their own way. For those who either are doing this or aspire to it, there isn't much out there in the way of books or cheerleading.

'Home Work' focuses largely on interesting homes built by baby-boomers who may or may not call themselves hippies, but are generally coming out of the 'back to the land' movement of the 60's and 70's that is generally associated with that subculture. This may or may not have been intentional on the part of the author. There is also a heavy West-coast bias at work. Every builder profiled seems to have a sauna & a beard and I could swear there's a pot plant in the foreground of one of the photos.

Honestly the stuff that the hippies started building 30 years ago is probably the cream of the 'interesting' owner-built homes in America. They had the will to build on their own, the low budgets that force creativity and building codes in rural areas were not quite so common as they are today. The timing was just right. Lloyd Kahn has found some of the coolest buildings that resulted from that hiccup of pioneering in the modern era, photographed them beautifully and humanized the builders.

Kahn takes time out half way through the book to celebrate simply-built structures and the joy of encountering them by presenting a series of photgraphic essays documenting his travels through regions thick with soulful buildings. Do you find yourself slowing down when you drive past solemn timber-framed barns or ramshackle sheds? Lloyd Kahn understands you. He has thoughtfully provided a number of pages of 'barn porn' for the junkies among us.

'Home Work' is a great source of not only ideas but affirmation that other people are in fact building some wierd stuff in the middle of nowhere and happily living in it. Perhaps it will give you the confidence you need to finally take the plunge.

What? No hobbit hole?

Well, this book has everything in it a person could want. 'Cept maybe a hobbit dwelling. Of course, there's so much imagination and so many ideas, that it wouldn't take much to come up with a very comfy hobbit hole. Now instead of just retiring, I'm dreaming of coming up with something unique that I can work on after I retire. And somehow I find myself coming back to this book for more and more ideas.... this book's dangerous!!!

Decent, but not comprehensive.

This book is detailed in its identification of manners but unfortunately not a comprehensive guide to etiquette. Bridges' approach is to identify and state the correct course of action for a gentleman. To his credit, the book does go through a lot of situations in which men will find themselves in our modern day. However, what this book requires to make it excellent is a comprehensive explanation of *why* these manners have become 'gentlemanly' custom. Other etiquette books I have read excel in explaining the reason why things are so rather than simply stating 'A gentleman will...' as begins almost every paragraph in this book. Because of this, it feels as though Bridges is simply providing a cheat sheet in the test of socialising rather than truly teaching one how to be a gentleman...

It's Not About You

That may be the most important lesson this book sets out to teach because as the authors put it in the introduction, "Simply acting like a gentleman is not enough. It is being a gentleman that is important." Or to put it another way, if your gentlemanly behavior is attracting favorable attention, chances are that you are doing it wrong...

or for the wrong reasons.

Much of this material will be familiar to those knowledgeable about traditional etiquette, but much of it is as new as the latest technology. Cell phone usage, including camera phone usage and texting, are covered, as is the proper use of email, along with more traditional guidance about formalwear (how to tie a bow tie with diagrams), how to know which fork to use and how to set a dinner table properly (with diagrams) so as to prevent confusion about the former, etc.

I was particularly struck by the wisdom of the advice concerning smoking. It begins with the common courtesy taught more than a century ago and segues into the modern era of restrictions, finishing up with VERY important advice on how to be a gentlemanly NONsmoker. The same evenhandedness is displayed when the topic is dietary restrictions, whether imposed for health, religious, or political reasons. It is quite refreshing to see both nonsmokers and vegetarians reminded that gentlemanly behavior is their obligation, too.

Defects? I noted very few. How to eat an artichoke would have benefitted from a diagram in addition to the detailed instructions, a topical index would have been nice, and there are always minor things over which gentlemen may disagree agreeably. The only two truly discordant notes might have been attempts at humor, which elsewhere in the book is usually well done. For example:

"If a gentleman feels the urge to color his mustache, he shaves his mustache off."

Ha ha, very funny. However, in going for the joke, the authors have neglected their primary task, guiding men into gentlemanly behavior. Since the authors nowhere condemn coloring the hair on top of the head or the wearing of facial hair, they present the graying, facial hair wearing, would-be gentleman with an unsolvable problem, which is not necessarily alleviated by deciding not to color the rest of his hair either. A man doesn't always gray uniformly, and going au natural can result in a man looking as if he actually has colored his hair...

badly.

The other possible joke comes in the instructions (with diagrams) for how to properly fold and read a newspaper in a confined space:

"A gentleman reads a national newspaper, preferably the New York Times, on a regular basis."

The jacket blurb mentions that one of the authors, John Bridges, has been profiled in the New York Times, but even so it has been a long time since one could recommend reading the New York Times for the purpose of being informed...

except in a punch line.

These minor nits aside, it is a wonderful book, ideal for reading in small bits.
