Excellent survey of the spread of Ganesh iconography in Asia

This is an eye-opening book on the reach of Ganesh iconography in Asia, from Afghanistan to Japan. Pal was at one time curator of the Asia collection at Norton-Simon in addition to his position in London. His take on the development of the deity is that mentions in early Hindu sources were independent of the theriomorphic image, and it was perhaps only in the last four or five centuries that they came to represent the same entity. It's a light survey, but comprehensive in geographical scope. Nicely illustrated, too. It's one of the few works of light reading not duplicated by other researchers, whereas the stories and significance of Ganesh from the Puranic sources can be found in endless books, in varying degrees of quality. Anyone interested in Asian art should own this book, especially now that it seems to be more widely available and reasonably priced.

I cherish getting to read stuff like this about my dad. We all rarely know all there is to know about what rattles around in our parent's minds. Reading this let me learn a few new things about how he saw the world. Larry asked some amazing questions that had never been put to dad. Thank you, Larry.

One of the most readable books of contemporary philosophy I've ever read.

Conversations with Carlin is thoroughly enjoyable. I just finished it, and I LOVED IT. I really didn't want to stop reading. It is a fairly short book (approximately equivalent to 89 pages, or so Amazon says). Although I always had positive thoughts about George Carlin -- I knew he was smart and funny and unique -- I wasn't a big follower of his act/shows/books. I never realized he was such a thinker. I honestly enjoyed reading his thoughts and I loved the questions the interviewer asked to bring those thoughts out.

I particularly loved the "argument against parental supervision," the way Carlin almost wasn't born (no spoilers here), reading about how Carlin came up with ideas, his thoughts on politics and education, and especially his thoughts on George Bush. Great stuff!

Conversations with Carlin was one of the most readable books of contemporary philosophy I've ever read.

(Sidenote: I felt that Getlen had the right amount of journalistic professionalism to keep himself out of it - really focusing on Carlin the entire time. That really helped me lose myself in the what Carlin was saying, and not have to feel like I was experiencing him through someone else's lens. I mean, I *was* experiencing him through Getlen's lens, but at least the lens was invisible, if you know what I mean.)

Insightful interview with a much-missed comedy great

As a longtime Carlin fan, I was so thrilled to be able to spend some time with the non-performing side of him. You learn his routines and you cherish his deftly honed turns of phrase, so it's fascinating to hear him (er, read - but you can also hear his voice in your head, at least I could) talking in normal conversational style about such a wide range of subjects. I've read various magazine interviews with him over the years, but none, obviously, was able to go to this length. And Carlin deserves this length. Larry Getlen obviously developed a great rapport with his subject, delving into topics from Carlin's formative childhood to really lofty philosophical questions, and Carlin, bless him, was game for discussing all of them. This is such a gift for anyone who loves Carlin and, like me, feels like the world became a less interesting place the day he died. Will make my Christmas shopping easy, for at least a couple of likeminded friends and family members.

About the Author
Mineko Takane Moreno, born and raised in Tokyo, received her degree in French literature. Her love of food has inspired a lifelong education in many cuisines, including Japanese, Chinese, French, and Italian. Moving to San Diego in 1973, she began teaching Japanese cuisine, with a specialty in sushi. She currently teaches dozens of sushi classes a year at seven culinary schools, including Macy’s, Williams-Sonoma, and Sur la Table. Mineko consults with restaurants wishing to put sushi and other specialties on their menu. Her culinary work has been featured in numerous print publications and on television and radio shows. She is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

Judi Strada has a bachelor’s degree in Russian studies, which led her to study other cultures through their foods. She was the food consultant and spokesperson for The Sheraton World Cookbook and The Culinary Festival Cookbook and coauthor of The Best of San Diego. She is a frequent cooking guest on television and radio shows on both coas ts. Judi, an award-winning writer, is currently food editor of San Diego Magazine; kitchen garden editor of Garden Compass Magazine; and a member of the Authors Guild, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the International Association of Culinary Professionals, and the James Beard Foundation. She is founding president of Les Dames d’Escoffier, San Diego.

I am a huge sushi fan and had been curious about trying to make my own. After my first attempt flopped, I started looking for a book that would explain step by step how to create some of my favorite rolls at home. This book provided easy to follow instructions as well as recipes I had never seen before and interesting facts about sushi culture. This was worth every penny!

Good Book with Limitations

This is a good book to get you started on your sushi career. It has lots of valuable tips on what you need and the procedures, but once you get that under your belt, I found the recipes could be less 'poofy' and more substantial. But if you need help learning how to season your rice, or about the various styles of sushi that's out there, its a nice book for your collection.

Bought this book to learn more basics about LEDS for hobbies. This book is more for specific projects, although some LED basics are covered. It seemed like broader applications of LEDS could have been included, as I am a true novice:) Overall a decent book if you already have some electronics knowledge.
