Must-read to understand power system dynamics!
The study of power system dynamics is challenging due to the existence of dynamics in different time-scale; for example, governor action in the scale of seconds, rotor flux phenomena in the scale of tenth of a second, stator flux phenomena in the scale of milliseconds. Mathematically speaking these are known as stiff systems. To avoid excessive simulation time or numerical instability due to the stiff nature of the model, in the power engineering community, it is customary to represent power systems by a set of differential-algebraic equations. The authors did an awesome job describing the theory to understand system dynamics and showing how to obtain a proper representation by using integral manifolds. I highly recommend this book to first year graduate degree students, engineers and scientists that have interest in the behavior of the power system.

Extremely interesting and readable

This is very informative, and thought-provoking, and fulfills the intent of it's title. As a nurse and a parent, I realize the ambivalency felt by those who are involved with a baby needing intensive care. It will help those who have never been there understand just what a baby experiences in the Intensive-Care Nursery. Keep in mind though that this book was published in 1993, and it's statistics are not up-to-date.

Difficult decisions in the nursery

Since I was born premature, this was a hard book for me to read. It was about babies that were born premature or with serious health problems and how health professionals had to make decisions as to whether to withhold care or to treat them and have them survive, but with disabilities. There were cases when they had to decide if treating the babies was causing them more suffering then was needed and if it would be kinder to let them die. As someone with a disability, it was alarming and disturbing how the doctors viewed babies that would be disabled as being less valuable than others there were parts of this book I found horrifying and other their parts that I just found sad. I think I read it from a different perspective knowing that had the doctors treating me when I was born prematurely known the level of disability I would face as an adult, many of them would have advocated letting me die....and I would have missed out on my whole life. Maybe my inability to separate my own situation from that of the babies in the book skewed my perceptions.....but I did find this a valuable book. I'm also coming at this from the point of view of a right to lifer....someone who feels babies should be given every change at life whether they are deemed to have a good life or not. So I pretty much had a strong opinion going in, and this book did nothing to sway me.

Excellent study

Anspach shows how different groups of people (nurses, parents, surgeons, etc.) weigh life-and-death decisions. She puts the decisions in legal, institutional, political, economic and professional contexts. In other words, she describes the complexity and nuance of these decisions. Her prose is vivid and sensitive: you can imagine yourself on the scene and almost hear the anguish and frustration of some of the people she interviewed.

Anspach brilliantly shows how the fates and troubles of a wide variety of individuals are shaped by larger social forces. This book is sociology at its best.

Beware: reaching the end of its useful life

Even though I'm new to Hibernate, this book was a fast, informative read. The author has a casual style that makes reading the book more enjoyable...to a point. But, there are problems. My two biggest issues were:

1. This book uses Hibernate 3.2.5. The latest version (as of this writing) is 3.6, which I, of course, installed. However, not being knowledgeable about the various releases, this turned out to be a huge mistake. 3.6 has some very big changes which made the installation instructions in the book almost useless. Most of the files named in the book are no longer there (the annotations module has been merged with the core, for example), some of the main classes used in the book don't seem to be there anymore, and even the configuration files are different now. I don't blame the author...this stuff just happens to tech books over time, and I could have just gone back and installed the earlier version to save myself this grief. I just wish I had not been the first person to pay over $50 for this book before realizing it has reached this state, and warned others. And this sort of thing is extremely frustrating to a new user that wants to get things rolling as quickly as possible.

2. Something I'm seeing a lot more recently in various forms of literature are obvious typos, grammar and punctuation errors, and attempts at being contemporary through the use of pseudo-words. Now, I'm no grammar Nazi, and I'm not perfect at all, but sprinkled in amongst the many typos in this book is the far too frequent use of the pseudo-word "kewl." At first I figured the author was trying to be funny, then I thought he might be using it in an ironic fashion, but after it reappeared ad nauseum, it got incredibly annoying. Making the typos even more annoying is the fact that the author mentions in the preface that he self-publishes, and so doesn't have the resources others might have to check for typos, but that this also allows him to make frequent updates to his text. This appears not to have happened. And at the very high price I paid for this book, I expected more quality. So, regarding this second issue, I would like to apply to the book the following pseudo-noun: Fail.

The best Hibernate book on the market

Hibernate Made Easy is such a great book, mainly because it's a learning guide, so the author really does his best teaching you in a very nice way and easy to read. After I've read it I greatly increased my Hibernate knowledge. To be sincere I thought Hibernate was harder.

The book starts teaching you how to set-up a database (MySQL) and Hibernate itself, which might be very useful if you never heard of Hibernate, because there are some files to configure. Then it proceeds in a very contextual way, that is, from the basic to more advanced topics, that's really important and often is not present in technical books.

About the topics in the book, I think the most important ones are covered, of course there much more topics in Hibernate, but as he clearly states, this book is a learning guide, not a reference book. All the CRUD(Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations, which are known to be the four basic operations in programs are very well explained with a lot of examples, especially the Read, dealing with search for objects in your database and the awesome Criteria API. The annotations are also very well covered, with very good and simple examples. Some patterns like Data Access Object (DAO) and Factory are covered, which might be very important in a decent JEE persistent application.

Maybe some people might think the examples are too basic, well, that's true, but this is a learning guide, so I don't think is a bad thing. The same to other more advanced topics.

So to conclude, the author has a very humane aspect of writing, he considers you a human-being not just a brain that stores data. And that's extremely important when you're learning something. The writing is very direct (not dozens of pages explaining the little details) and clear. Full of examples and good coverage of Hibernate. Definitely recommended!

Delivers On Title's Promise!

I'm an experienced Java developer who needed to learn how to use Hibernate. Based on the other good reviews of Hibernate Made Easy, I decided to purchase that book. I'm very glad I did.

I worked my way through each chapter and was able to easily learn how to use Hibernate with JPA annotations. After completing the book I could translate what I learned into an application that uses Hibernate, Spring, Maven and a completely different database.

The first two chapters help you setup a development environment on your computer so you can load and run the example code. The book uses MySQL as its database for the examples. All the steps are clearly explained and I didn't have any trouble getting MySQL, Hibernate, and the Java source code to all work together.

The strength of this book is the easy to follow code examples. Cameron goes out of his way to ensure that everything about the example code is explained well. Each chapter covers a specific area and isn't so long that you feel like you're hacking your way through the Amazon jungle. I never felt lost in the book.

Cameron is very good in this book at explaining the basics of Hibernate and then building on those basics to teach how to implement more advanced Hibernate features (e.g. many-to-many relationships).

The author clearly stands behind his work (checkout his $100 code guarantee) and Cameron answered promptly via email some questions I had about the code. I'm a stickler for example code that works and Hibernate Made Easy delivers.

There is also an excellent chapter where Cameron explains how to setup a set of data access objects that use a generic DAO to abstract into one class common data access methods like find, save, and delete. I was able to put that concept to work in my own projects.

I only have two minor criticisms. The code download is not complete and somewhat disorganized. For example, several of the classes needed to build the final example application (chapters 20-22) were missing. These classes were all in the book so I just had to type them myself. Since the classes aren't too long, that wasn't much of a chore.

I would have preferred a code download organized by chapter. So if I wanted to build a Java application in my favorite IDE that would match up with a specific chapter's example code, I would have just one place to look for the source files to import. Instead, in the code download for the book, the source files from all the chapters are present but not in any organized manner.

Overall I give this book 4.75 out of 5 stars. It really delivered on helping me learn Hibernate.

If you're an experienced Java developer who wants to learn Hibernate then I strongly recommend this book. I enjoyed reading it, learned a great deal, and am now applying what I learned to my projects at work.

Setting Education on Genuine Philosophical Foundations

Steven Cahn, one of the world's best known anthologizers of philosophical writing, has brought forth a remarkable collection on the philosophy of education. Better known, perhaps, for his anthologies in moral and political philosophy and other areas of general philosophy, he is also, arguably, the single, most important anthologizer in the field of philosophy of education. He has been doing philosophy of education anthology editing since the 1970s, when his original The Foundations of Education hit the scene. Making quite a splash, it was superseded by his Classic and Contemporary Readings in the Philosophy of Education, to the new, second edition of which the present review is devoted.

The original Classic and Contemporary Readings was a major breakthrough in its own right. It in effect defined the essential contours of philosophy of education as an academic discipline, putting it on the philosophy map, so to say. It divided the corpus of literature into two subdivisions, classic and contemporary, and went on to flesh them out with some highly judiciously chosen selections. Most notable among the classic selections were Plato's Republic, Rousseau's Emile, A.N. Whitehead's The Aims of Education, and Dewey's Democracy and Education. Yes, the latter two were also classified as classics! On the contemporary side, the classification was further subdivided into three subcategories: schools, teaching, and curriculum. And the selections were really great and meaningful.

Under School, you had, for example, Any Gutmann's Democratic Education and Israel Scheffler's seminal paper "Moral Education and the Democratic Ideal." Obviously, Gutmann's Democratic Education wasn't reproduced in its entirety: it is a 300 page book - so how could it be!? But the selection did feature the whole of the book's first chapter, which is a substantive discussion in its own right and, at the same time, very revealing of the core essence of the larger view taken in the Gutmann book. Another thing about the selection of these two pieces is that they neatly complement one another. Scheffler's is the chronologically earlier of the two, and Gutmann's thinking was largely influenced by it - something duly acknowledged in footnotes to her opus. But beyond the School heading, the Teaching and Curriculum headings also featured some very notable selections.

Under the former, you had, for example, Jacques Maritain's forays into Thomistic education, Paulo Freire's ventures into what has come to be called critical pedagogy, and Nel Nodding's feministically oriented muses on teaching, with its ubiquitous stress on caring. Under the latter were included, among others, Jane Martin's critique of a-feministic philosophy of education, Richard Rorty's postmodernistic approach (a real eye-opener!), and John Searle's objectivity based rejoinder. All in all, the book represented what was real and difference-making in ongoing philosophy of education.

Underlying the whole approach taken was a two-pronged principle. Prong one: students are best introduced to philosophy of education through direct acquaintance with samples from the literature. Historical or biographical overviews fall short. This contention already has, I should think, a lot going for it. Prong two: brief excerpts don't do the trick. To become intimate with the thought processes of a great thinker you want to dig deep and get a feel for where he or she is coming from and where he or she is headed. And unless you sample generously apportioned expanses of the thinker's writing, you are hopelessly shortchanged. In this respect, the Classic and Contemporary Readings anthology stood out: it thoughtfully carved out large swaths of material for the reader to engage with and absorb.

Now this was all fine and well as far as it went. But now a couple of problems had to be faced. a) What to do for a teacher of philosophy of education who wanted to devote an entire semester's course to classical sources, to the exclusion of contemporary ones, but also wanted to provide some contemporary perspective anchored to the classical sources themselves? b) What to do for the teacher of philosophy of education who wanted to see the contemporary coverage brought up to date and pay homage to new tendencies in educational reform, such as home schooling, use of vouchers, and having recourse to other mechanisms designed to enhance the scope of parental choice in the matter of a child's schooling? Cahn responded to both these challenges.

To the first, he responded by putting together a new collection whose coverage is confined to classical sources but whose modus operandi is to append to each classic selection an originally written piece by a scholar of contemporary or recent vintage, recognized as an expert in regard to the classical figure in question. This response is grist for the mill of another book review, not the present one. The response to the second challenge though has been to revise the originally crafted Classic and Contemporary Readings in the Philosophy of Education - the volume under review - so that it includes selections bearing not only on items pertaining to educational reform but, as well, modes of thought that have only more recently entered the portals of sustained study in philosophy of education: multiculturalism, postmodernism, critical theory, feminism, cosmopolitanism, etc. In addition, a wholly useful introductory overview has, for the first time, been graciously provided. The result is a work not beyond recognition but answering to a higher principle nonetheless. It cannot be recommended too strongly.
