Sondra Ashmore, Ph.D., is an IT leader who specializes in large Fortune 500 corporations. Her areas of expertise include product management, project management, and new product development for IT offerings. She received her graduate education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in technical communication and management, and at Iowa State in human computer interaction. Her research focuses on the software development process, both Waterfall and Agile, and explores strategies to optimize the user experience. In 2012, she was recognized as a "Forty under 40" business leader by the Business Record, and won the Iowa Technology Association's Women of Innovation award for business innovation and leadership for her work at IBM. Sondra is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP), Project Management Institute Agile Certified Professional (PMI-ACP), and Stanford Certified Project Manager (SCPM).

 

Kristin Runyan is a product delivery expert, specializing in product management, Agile coaching and training, and leadership. At the beginning of the book the authors say they created this book to be used in a classroom setting. I agree that it is a great book for the classroom, but I would also recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the current Agile methodologies. It does what the title of the book says it does, and it introduces the reader to Agile methods.

It starts with a nice introduction to the Agile movement's history and then covers all the traditional topics that fall within the Agile purview. I have listed the chapters below to give you a high level view of the topics covered.

Chapter 1. The History and Value of Agile Software Development
Chapter 2. Organizational Culture Considerations with Agile
Chapter 3. Understanding the Different Types of Agile
Chapter 4. Describing the Different Roles
Chapter 5. The New Way to Collect and Document Requirements
Chapter 6. Grooming and Planning
Chapter 7. Testing, Quality, and Integration
Chapter 8. Tracking and Reporting
Chapter 9. Agile beyond IT
Appendix. John Deere Case Study

I was initially worried about this book because the very first sentence has a typo, but that wasn't a problem throughout the rest of the book. Just really bad luck.

This book is a snapshot of Agile processes and practices as they are taught in the software development world at this time. The Agile processes and practices in this book address small team development. They don't go into large distributed or enterprise level projects that would use Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) or Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).

They do hit a very broad range of subjects and cover them in enough detail that you walk away with a level of understanding that would allow you to work with an Agile team.

They introduce Extreme Programming ( XP), Scrum, Feature-Driven Development, Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM), Lean Software Development, Kanban Method, and Crystal Family in one chapter. In the chapters that follow, they use different parts of the methodologies to explain how to accomplish tasks in an agile way, that are part of a normal software development lifecycle. Some examples are defining roles, eliciting requirements, planning, tracking assets, reporting, and developing.

Throughout the book the authors have interviews with leading Agilists. This is a nice touch because this introduces real world experiences.

The author's use a fictitious company named Cayman Design to show how some of the topics they cover would be executed. Cayman Design is moving in the Agile direction.

For those starting to learn Agile processes and practices this book is the perfect place to start. It is necessary to learn how things should work, before learning how they really work. Meaning being agile is not easy, and there are a lot of books out now based on that fact. They include experienced based on the projects that fail, the few that succeed, and the many that are sold as successes. I would start here though if you are just starting with Agile. Let's make it three times in one paragraph, start here!!

In real world development projects processes should be tailored for a given project. Allowing you to account for your team's skills and availability, your business's needs, the tools you have available, the environment you are working in, the difficulty of the solution, the working environment - team member locations, greenfield vs. brownfield development, and many more things that are usually not taken into consideration when a project is started.

People leave, laws change, hurricanes happen, people get sick, and so on. The point is your process must be as agile and resilient as the software you create. That means the process must be changeable, extensible, as simple as it can be while still getting the job done, understandable, and the people involved must have the skill level to execute the required tasks.

Always being low ceremony does not work. Low ceremony projects are smaller lightweight projects. They produce less documentation and artifacts in general. Low ceremony does not have anything to do with being agile, although many times experienced teams will run projects at the lower ceremony than a less experienced team would be able to. Agile is an enabled state that is only accomplished through experience. It can be learned, but absolutely not by doing less.

This book helps the reader understand all the tasks in typical projects so that when you come across a tailored process you will have an understanding of the roles and activities being performed.

Bill Gates said, "The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency."

The same can be said about Agile and Lean practices:

There are two primary things you need to be part of an environment that uses Agile processes. The first is enough experience to execute your role's activities in a way that enables agility, and the second is an understanding of the Agile processes. This book can give you the later of the two. I highly recommend this book to teachers and to those who want to start learning about the Agile methods.

I Was Looking For a Good Textbook on Agile and Found It!

First, as a disclaimer, I am a software testing consultant and also a project life cycle consultant. Although I train teams in agile testing methods, I do not consider myself an agile evangelist. There are many things about agile methods I like, but there are also things that trouble me about some agile methods. I work with organizations that use a wide variety of project life cycle approaches and believe that one approach is not appropriate in all situations. In this review, I want to avoid getting into the weeds of sequential life cycles versus agile, the pros and cons of agile, and instead focus on the merits of the book itself.

Since the birth of agile, I have observed that agile methods keep evolving and it is hard to find in one place a good comparison of the various agile methodologies. I have been looking for a good book that I could use in a learning context and I think this book is the one.

One of the issues that people experience in learning agile is that the early works on the topic are from the early experiences in agile. We are now almost fifteen years into the agile movement and many lessons have been learned. While this book references many of the early works, the authors present the ideas in a more recent context.

This is a very easy to read book and very thorough in it’s coverage of agile methods. I also appreciate that the authors are up-front about some of the pitfalls of certain methods in some situations.

The book is organized as a learning resource, with learning objectives, case studies, review questions and exercises, so one could easily apply this book “as-is” as the basis for training agile teams. An individual could also use this book as a self-study course on agile methods. There is also a complete glossary which helps in getting the terms down and a good index, which helps in using the book as a reference.

The chapter on testing provided an excellent treatment of automating agile tests, and manual testing was also discussed. In my opinion, there could have been more detail about how to test functionality from an external perspective, such as the role of functional test case design in an agile context. Too many people only test the assertions and acceptance-level tests without testing the negative conditions. The authors do, however, emphasize that software attributes such as performance, usability, and others should be tested. The “hows” of those forms of testing are not really discussed in detail. You would need a book that dives deeper into those testing topics.

I also question how validation is defined and described, relying more on surveys than actual real-world tests. Surveys are fine, but they don’t validate specific use of the product and features. If you want true validation, you need real users performing tests based on how they intend to use a product.

There is significant discussion on the importance of having a quality-minded culture, which is foundational for any of the methods to deliver high-quality software. This includes the ability to be open about discussing defects.

To me, the interviews were interesting, but some of the comments were a little concerning. However, I realize they are the opinions of agile practitioners and I see quite a bit of disagreement between experts at the conferences, so I really didn’t put a lot of weight in the interviews.

One nitpick I have is that on the topic of retrospectives, the foundational book, “Project Retrospectives” by Norm Kerth was not referenced. That was the book that changed the industry term “post-mortem” to what we now know as “retrospectives” and also laid the basis for the retrospective practice as we know it today.

My final thought is that the magic is not in the method. Whether using agile methods or sequential life cycles, like waterfall, it takes more than simply following a method correctly. If there are issues such team strife, stakeholder disengagement and other organizational maladies, then agile or any other methodology will not fix that. A healthy software development culture is needed, along with a healthy enterprise culture and understanding of what it takes to build and deliver great software.

I can highly recommend this book for people who want to know the distinctions between agile methods, those that want to improve their practices and for management that may feel a disconnect in their understanding of how agile is being performed in their organization. This book is also a great standalone learning resource!

In true Agile fashion, clear concepts just in time!

I am a fan of text books that make the subject matter clear to self-study and for classroom use. This book is structured to accommodate both learning styles. The content moves the student from no understanding of Agile Methodology through all of the topics that make agile different from other methodologies. The content is easy to understand, reinforced with case studies & interviews and review questions.

I am a consultant who works in software development with agile teams. As I move from client to client, I oftentimes work with teams over varying agile experience. I believe this book will be relevant for both new teams and experienced teams because the authors explained the concepts clearly, reinforced them with interviews and case studies, then offer the reader reviews that further help the reader commit the concepts to memory.

In fact, I am meeting with a new team member today that has no exposure to agile. I plan to provide this text to him for preparation to join our agile team.

Ridiculously valuable reference for the marketing writer with lots of specific "how to" guidance

Writing has been my job and passion for twenty-five years, but I needed some "how to" advice that the author promised in her introduction: "... part writing guide, part handbook on the rules of good sportsmanship in content marketing, and all-around reliable desk companion for anyone creating or directing content on behalf of brands." She delivers everything she promised and more.

I found the author's style to be entertaining and insightful as well as practical. One mere example among hundreds is her formula for judging the impact of your writing: "Utility × Inspiration × Empathy = Quality Content." Her point: you have to perform well in all three areas; if you score a zero for any one of these factors... well, you can do the math.

Part I reviews much of what I already knew about the process of writing. She covers not only the key steps in the writing process, but also offers detailed insights into refining and improving your copy. Part I contains great advice for people who don't know how to approach the task of writing, and it's laid out in a way that's easy to understand and remember.

Part II, about grammar and usage, offers lots of "Do this" and "Don't do that" advice. If you're a good writer already, then you'll find this section a refreshing, funny reminder about all the ways that we can go wrong with words. But if you're not as good a writer as you'd like to be, you'll learn a lot about giving your language more impact and power.

Part III is the briefest section, but with some powerful advice about crafting a great story.

Part IV contains lots of practical advice about what to write and how to write it. You'll find lots of detailed suggestions, such as how to properly cite others' work within your own. I particularly liked her chapter entitled, "See Content Moments Everywhere," which will open your eyes to the opportunities all around you for interesting stories that will help your brand punch above its weight. (And that's just one example of 15 subjects she covers in this section.)

But Part V – wow! It alone was worth ten times the price of the book. She gives point-by-point guidance for 13 different types of content that marketers create, such as blog posts, tweets, emails, headlines, home pages, infographics, and more. Nearly every marketer will learn something on every page of this section, no matter how experienced you are. I expect to return to this section again and again.

Part VI concludes with a list of pointers to various types of tools and resources that writers will certainly find useful.

With so many wonderful resources available to marketing writers today, especially content marketers, it takes a lot to stand out above the crowd. But in Ann Handley's "Every Writes," she delivers one of the most useful pieces I've seen.

A great resource that is easily accessible and will be often referenced. You will see results.

Content, we know you are king, but it is time to meet your queen: Ann Handley. From small blogs to mammoth corporations, Ann Handley has reigned them all. With her eye for empathetic material that is easy to understand and implement, she is justified in her sovereignty.

Handley's latest book, EVERYBODY WRITES, continues her double-decade trend of sharing techniques to cut the mush and filler and create what your reading clientele yearns to see: an attractive and informative message. The book has everyone's favorite--short chapters!--that are organized in an accessible manner: how to write better; grammar rules; story rules; publishing rules; things marketers write; and, content tools.

Note from that list: writing better and grammar are two different things. Both are helpful; both stand alone. One of Handley's most helpful pieces from the section "how to write better" is her writing GPS. She refers to it and expounds upon it throughout the book. In a nutshell, here it is:

1. Goal--what is it?
2. Reframe for the reader
3. Seek data and examples
4. Organize
5. Write to one person
6. Produce the Ugly First Draft (TUFD)
7. Walk away
8. Rewrite
9. Give a great headline or title
10. Have someone edit
11. One final look for readability
12. Give the reader a "what now"

As for grammar, Handley explores shibboleths such as avoiding franken-words and the shaming of adverbs (thumbs up for the numerous Steven King ON WRITING quotes). On one hand it is unfortunate that content creators have to be told the difference between "its" and "it's"; on the other hand it is unfortunate Handley says, "I'd say don't worry about it" about the differences between "that" and "which". If you are looking for syntax instruction, I'd say read Steven Pinker's upcoming book THE SENSE OF STYLE.

Grab this book for one thing: creating better content. That's where Handley shines and that's what most of EVERYBODY WRITES is about. She explains it with this formula: Utility x Inspiration x Empathy = Quality Content. For a math refresher, if any variable equals zero, the final product is zilch. You need utility! You need inspiration! You need empathy! Ann Handley teaches you how to achieve all three.

EVERYBODY WRITES is a great resource that is easily accessible and will be often referenced. You will see results.

4 Reasons to Buy Everybody Writes

Here are four reasons why anyone who creates content on behalf of a brand — from the CEO to a blog writer — should keep a copy of Everybody Writes at their desk.

1. All of the answers. All in one place.
A day in the life of a content creator is full of questions. Do I capitalize this? Is this active voice? How long should this subject line be? What should I title this post? Will this appeal to my audience? As a content creator myself, sometimes I Google the answers to these questions or scour the Internet for best practices. Other times, I ask the questions aloud, hoping someone sitting nearby might be the definitive source on well…everything. (Kudos to my colleagues who always try their best to answer my questions, especially the software engineers, who, I’m sure, are largely uninterested). Enter Everybody Writes — a book that really does have all the answers. Problems with grammar? Check Chapter 37. Wondering what the ideal length for a blog post is? Chapter 60. There’s even a full list of words to avoid because they simply aren’t real. (Spoiler alert: contrary to popular belief, “amazeballs” is not a real word.)

2. Learning doesn’t have to be boring
We’ve all taken a course in writing at one time or another — whether it was freshman composition in high school or an advanced business writing class in college. This means we’ve seen the basic writing textbook, packed with rules about paragraphs, grammar, spelling, tone of voice, style etc.
Although useful, these books are boring. Everybody Writes has the same utility as these textbooks, but is far from boring. At times, it’s even laugh-out-loud funny. One of my favorite lines in the book comes when Ann applies the phrase “You can’t rush art” to the writing process:

“But forget that mantra. Because at some point, you do have to rush your own art. Otherwise, your art sits on its butt on the couch eating chips and salsa.”

Later, she urges content creators to establish a voice for their brand, or as she puts it, “an expression of your company’s personality and point of view.” She lists examples of brands with unique voices such as Wistia and Burger King. However, it’s clear that one of the most unique voices to draw inspiration from is Ann’s.

3. A humanizing look at content curation
Ann offers up some great advice on how to make the often-automated process more personal. She urges readers to add context, commentary and a human element to each curated piece. This is valuable guidance for many content marketers who tend to curate content without adding any value for the reader.

4. Inspiration
For almost every tip or fact that Ann provides, she also includes a specific example of how this tactic worked (or didn’t work) for a well-known brand.

Brilliant! A outstanding book.

What impresses me about Wade Cook is that he teaches you to think for yourself. Stock brokers want you to think that you can't do it without them. If you end up listening to your broker (average brokers) you usually end up broker. No wonder so many dissatisfied investors are suing those guys.
According to a article in USA Today, 87% of people get investing advice from friends, neighbors and relatives and only 13% get advice from brokers and financial planners. The article went on to say that the 13% who got "professional" "expert" advice from financial planners, brokers and advisors wished they had listened to their friends, neighbors and relatives instead.
Why the complaints against Wade? For one thing, he is a rich,easy target. Notice nobody tries to sue a broke person do they? Another reason is that some people are looking for an out. Buyer remorese is common with all types of financial products and programs.
The genuis behind Wade Cook is his ability to take the difficult and communicate that in an easy to understand way. And just think, Wade Cook's real passion is basketball. If he ever focused strictly on the stock market he would really be dangerous.
Red Light Green Light is an excellent book. With the stock market starting to buzz again, this book should be at your side before making any trade. I also recommend Wall Street Money Machine Vol 1, Wall Street Money Machine Vol. 2 (Stock Market Miracles) and 2 Bad Years and Up We Go which is an excellent book to show you how to trade when the markets are acting like they are right now...in a range.
The cost of these books is about the same cost as four trades with your broker and if you listen to Wade, you will actually end up richer, not broker.

Very easy read. It reads more like bullet points with short explanations. Even "Non-readers" could quickly and easily read and enjoy this book. As for it contents, it gave me so much to think about. It pointed out so many things that I do that I didn't realize. Some good, some bad... It gave me some insight on why my wife reacts the way she does to my actions and words. My wife is reading the "100 Ways to Love Your Husband" and I can easily say that things around our house have been easier. Just read it buddy. You'll be glad you did! And get your wife to read the Love Your Husband book. BIG benefits. ;)

I have never been a book reader. Your book has helped m in so.many ways. My relationship with my wife and with my Lord and savior Jesus Christ. We have become closer as a unit and reading this book ha opened my eyes up to many things. I thought I had it all figured out with all the tools I needed. This book is amazing. I would recommend it to any male that may be thinking about marriage or maybe starting a relationship. Get this book. Truly amazing.

This is definitely a book for beginners - that's NOT a bad thing!

There seems to be a lot of unnecessary hostility towards a book that gives very simple and basic approaches to life and figure drawing. The author's approach was that if you're going to life drawing you're probably not going into the intensive workshops that show bone and muscles, this is your first time and you only get 1-2 hours, so how do you start?

Allan's explanations of how to approach the figure as a beginner are really simple and reasonable. In fact, this book makes me do something other anatomy books haven't done.....RELAX. If you see that a teacher is drawing the figure as an average human being, why shouldn't you? Do you need to draw like Burne Hogarth especially given that the subject matter you're going to be drawing from, are average and natural figures. Everyday people are what you encounter in a life drawing class, so you need to learn how to walk before you start looking for style.

The author is honest about his approach and discusses his weaknesses, and how he approached solutions. That's better than pretending you're a perfect anatomy god. You might think "well, if he's not not an anatomy god, then why should I read this book?" Allan tells you how to start, and how to use basics to start approaching the figure in a life drawing class, what to look for and how to capture information in short amounts of time.

This isn't the end all/be all to figure drawing books, but this is a good book to go back and read when you're stuck sometimes. It gives you the steps to start drawing, not just how to draw better.

Allan is honest, he didn't want to include an anatomy section. He felt that there are better teachers than him in that department. He wanted to get people comfortable drawing what they see in figure drawing classes.

Learning the muscles are for more intermediate students, they're not something you should learn as a beginner, and not something you're actively looking for in the average life drawing class. This is not to say you shouldn't learn anatomy of muscle and skeletal studies because they ARE important as you improve as an artist, but let's look at it like this.

Look at a children's "How to draw dogs" book? Does the author go into detailed anatomy studies when you know a child is just trying to start out? The same goes for life drawing. A person needs to learn how to observe certain basics in life drawing before going in to details. This book is perfect for that.

Studying and making art for many years now, it was refreshing to see a book actually cover the basics in such a relaxed manner, and now it's helping me go back and place a better start on my own studies of the figure, as well as other books that are good at teaching structural anatomy.

Thoughts on Figure Drawing Workshop

The study of figure drawing can be broken down into two parts: the mechanical and the aesthetic. They cannot be separated in the finished product, but they can, and should be separated during early study. The mechanical part can be analyzed, measured, judged, and taught. The aesthetic part cannot be truly analyzed, measured, or judged, and since there are many legitimate opinions on what constitutes good or bad art, it ultimately comes down to personal taste, and that changes. Because of this, the aesthetic component probably cannot even be taught, only fed and encouraged.
Recognizing this, the author has chosen to stick with the teachable component in this book to avoid the almost insurmountable problems that are caused by exposing embryo artists to the confusing realm of aesthetics before they are ready for it. The early (and often exclusive) focus on style and technique by teachers can interfere with a students ability to see clearly, impartially, and logically. Carried to the extreme, this creates carbon copies of the teacher's own personal preferences and leaves the student without the tools to express their own artistic visions clearly. This is especially true for the many young artists who wish to express themselves realistically. Since the aesthetic component contains your personal style, I believe that it should be left to grow by exposure to other good examples with as little influence from a teacher's personal opinions as possible during the early stages of training.
This view will undoubtedly get this book some lively, if not outright hostile reviews from the more insecure teachers, and, of course there will always be those who feel they can intelligently critique a book without actually reading it, but I stand by it. We have all seen the results of both ways of teaching.
This book is directed mainly at beginners and those who missed getting their true basics earlier. You'll find drawings scanned straight out of the authors sketchbooks, giving an honest example of what to expect as you work under the conditions you find in figure drawing workshops. You will find no brilliant examples of twenty hour drawings, or stylistic, overmuscled anatomical renderings that might confuse the message. You will find it necessary to actually read the text and study the drawings carefully, thoughtfully, and with an open mind if you are to get the most from it.
Unless you are perfectly satisfied with your own work, there will be something here for you, simply read it, and approach it with an open mind.

Possibly the best book I have ever read on the subject

It was many long years ago, that I tried my hand at figure drawing without much success. Now over a decade later, I tried my hand at it again and casually pickd up this book to see what it had to offer in terms of advice.

I have to say that this is "hands down" the best book on the subject I have ever read on the subject. It is simple and easy to follow; containing a wealth of information and tips about drawing the figure perfectly from start to finish. It is definietly one of the few books that actually TEACHES you how to draw, in a way that's easy to understand.

Some people have dismissed the book as being too cartoony compared to those of Anthony Ryder and doesn't go nearly as deep when it comes to fine details and anatomy. But I think Kraayvangers drawings flow better and display a variety of style based on the different materials used to draw them.

Others have criticized it for not being as wordy or in depth as the other books. But I believe in the principle that less is more. Not everybody (especially myself) likes to plow through a drawing book like its an academic textbook. I learn better through mimicing and observing and there's even enough information in here to go deeper if necessary.

All in all, this is a great book for beginners and pros alike. Don't let the cover fool you, inside there is a wealth of infomation.

Very good m/m/f menage :D

This was a very good story. I liked Mia, Jake and Damien and enjoyed their story.

Mia is a receptionist at a P.I. firm. The firm is run by her late brother's lover who is like a brother to her. Mia has a special gift that makes her a bit more than a receptionist though, she has the ability to memorize and replicate anything she sees.

Jake is a P.I. and works at the same firm as Mia. He used to be a spy and did many things that have made him feel dark and unworthy of someone like Mia. That doesn't stop him from wanting her...even if he wont allow himself to go there. Jake is also a Dom that has a bondage kink but he keeps his relationships casual.

Damien is a billionaire, making his money through computer programing and designing fast cars and other revolutionary tech. Damien has had bad luck with women and it's propelled his sexual tastes more towards voyeurism.

Jake and Mia get involved in a case with Damien as the target. A competitor has accused him of stealing some sensitive and confidential designs and he hired their firm to investigate. They know that Damien has some unusual sexual tastes and decide to attempt to seduce him into becoming involved with Jake and Mia. Since Damien is known not to take part but only watch, that means that Jake and Mia won't be involved with him so much but will be involved with each other. Mia is willing to take on the job, especially since it gives her the chance to explore things with Jake...something she's been fantasizing about since they started working together. Jake agrees to the job but it determined to keep his feelings in check because he believes he's not good for Mia long-term.

Mia is pretty innocent and Jake knows that it'll be a lure for Damien. They manage to catch his eye and things begin. Mia and Jake are familiar with and trust each other so they work well as a couple, their chemistry (that has been ignored up to now) showing strongly once they start exploring things between them. Damien is drawn to them both and finds himself interested in being with Mia and Jake more than he has to anyone in the past. As they start exploring things, all 3 of them start feeling more than expected. This brings some uncomfortable issues for Mia and Jake considering the fact that they're there on a job. Especially since the more they get to know Damien, the less they believe the accusations against him. Things between the 3 go well but of course, eventually the truth comes out and there's some drama and pain when it does. There's also some issues with a bad guy that threatens Mia but that works out well in the end. After dealing with some hurt feelings and such, the trio is able to reunite and the story ends with a very nice start to a HEA.

This was a very enjoyable story. I liked all 3 of the characters and enjoyed seeing them get together. I have to admit that the fact that Jake and Mia were doing something that I knew would cause issues for the trio tended to worry me but I liked the way things were dealt with. The main complaint I have is that there wasn't more time given to the story while the trio was happily back together...I would have liked to see a bit more of how they settled in together. Overall, this was a pretty good story with characters I really liked so I'd recommend it. :D

Good but....

I read this one because of the first Billionaires book. I liked the first one a lot more than this one. The characters were good but I would have been happier with more time spent on development with them. The book was a good read, the dialogue was well written but it felt a little rushed. I would recommend it even with the little things I critiqued about it. Emma Holly can write and I love the happy tone of her more recent books. Waiting for more!

This story has it all....beautiful women, male Adonis, brilliant billionaire, government agents, private investigator, industrial espionage, crazy women and lots of hot sex. I don't know if I left anything out. Bottom line it's about relationships, love and trust.
