Why Animals Matter: Animal Consciousness, Animal Welfare, and Human Well-being, by Marian Stamp Dawkins

Renowned authority Marian Stamp Dawkins' new work presents an illuminating and urgent argument for the need to rethink animal welfare. In the vein of Temple Grandin's work, Dawkins explains that this welfare must be made to work in practice to have any effect, and cannot be tinged by anthropomorphism and claims of animal consciousness, which lack firm empirical evidence and are often freighted with controversy and high emotions. Instead, animal-welfare efforts must focus on science and on fully appreciating the critical role animals play in human welfare. With growing concern over such issues as climate change and food shortages, how we treat those animals on which we depend for survival needs to be put squarely on the public agenda. Dawkins seeks to do this by offering a more complete understanding of how animals help us. In the end, it is human self-interest that will drive changes in our treatment of animals. Taking positions that might surprise and will certainly challenge animal lovers, Dawkins presents a persuasive argument for why animals truly matter.

Empathic Anthropomorphism
By Karen Davis, PhD
Marian Stamp Dawkins rejects "anthropomorphism" as a way of interpreting the minds and feelings of other animals. However, anthropomorphism based on empathy and careful observation is a valid approach to reasonable inferences about other species. Indeed (alluding to an earlier book of hers), we can only see the world "through their eyes" by looking through our own. Since humans are linked to other animals through evolution, there is a natural basis for interpreting their inner life that goes beyond merely imposing a "sentimental" human pattern upon them. There are genetic, evolutionary affiliations that underlie the epistemology of interpreting other animals' meanings and experiences through their behavior and neurophysiology. Reasonable inferences may be drawn regarding an animal's body language, facial expressions and vocal inflections in situations that produce comparable responses in ourselves.

Dawkins is perverse in her insistence that there can be no reasonable basis for interpreting, or even assuming the existence of, consciousness in other creatures. This is a solipsistic outlook that imprisons us from our fellow creatures and denies connectedness and reciprocity with them. Obviously we cannot claim to be omniscient about what is happening in another being's mind (not even our own!), but to argue that there is no valid anthropomorphic basis for assuming or interpreting the existence and activity of consciousness in a dog, a whale, a chicken or a horse, despite the preponderant evidence of consciousness and purposefulness in them, seems more silly than scientific. Dawkins's stance does not elevate science; instead it belittles the behavioral science she adheres to as a sterile endeavor, hostile to kinship and blind to reality.

I discuss Dawkins's rejection of a scientific basis for assuming other animal species can experience pleasure and happiness in Is It Unscientific to Say that an Animal is Happy?

Dawkins' dangerous idea: Animals are conscious beings and science does count
By Marc Bekoff
This book summarily ignores or denies the existence of excellent scientific data supporting the not so surprising claim that other animals are indeed conscious beings. I've published an extensive review in an essay for Psychology Today.

Claims that "being anthropomorphic" is anti-science and demeaning comments about the excellent research of some of Professor Dawkins' esteemed colleagues are so far off it's almost laughable, but it really isn't at all. I fear that this book may actually be used by some people to justify continued animal use and abuse because of the spurious conclusions Professor Dawkins draws by rejecting what we really do know about animal consciousness. Animals are conscious beings and good science matters very much. To continue to deny that other animals are conscious flies in the face of what we know about them and also could be used to justify harming them. I like to call this ill-founded argument "Dawkins' Dangerous Idea".

It Takes a Conscience to Recognize Animal Consciousness
By Jim Robertson
Contrary to universally-held unfavorable assumptions, based on her recent insensible behavior and apparent one-dimensional existence, Marian Stamp Dawkins may in fact possess at least a rudimentary level of self-awareness, but you wouldn't know it by her new book, "Why Animals Matter." This new and unwelcomed project makes me wonder if she's not actually an emotional automaton programmed to react to stimuli but lacking the ability to think and feel. Of course, one risks accusations of bald-faced anthropomorphism and the loss of all credibility for suggesting that she might be capable of progressive thought or concern for others, and rightly so. But radical, new studies have tentatively shown that old-school behaviorists like Dawkins can grasp simple grammar and the meanings of certain symbols (especially the dollar signs surely dangled in front of them by animal industrialists to inspire them to write things so contrary to the welfare of animals). No doubt people could produce anecdotal evidence to support the theory that Dawkins was in fact conscious while writing this book, but how will we ever know what's going on inside her mind?
